GOOD REASON NOT TO BUY A C-5
They are equipped with a black box that if you have an accident the police can download the info and it will show your speed what percent of throttle and if you where braking or not all this data will be used against you.

On the reverse side, if someone slams into your vette you would probably appreciate it if the helpful police officer was able to determine how fast the other car was moving...

With OBD III coming, it will only get worse.

That info was on 60 minutes or one of the spin-offs. That info has been available and has been used in court for years. I am sure it has improved and more info is available. One of the first cases was a pro football players family that tried to sue by saying that the airbag didn't go off. The computer info showed that the car did its job.
I found the article:
It was Jerome Brown in a Zr1 http://www-nrd.nhtsa.dot.gov/edr-sit...s_Diagnose.pdf

I don't know exactly how many or which models, but quite a few of the new cars have the same black box.

I personally would prefer not to have my actions recorded and am perfectly willing to take the consequences thereof.

Re: GOOD REASON NOT TO BUY A C-5 (LT-4 CE)
the manufacturers put the data capture into the car for a couple of reasons... they can compare data and analyze accident data within know parameters of damage.
The only way the cops can get it is though court order. It is NOT public data. Just because it is there, does not mean it is available.... It is owned by the cars owner, the maker cannot release it!!!!
GM can d/l it... somewhere deep in your buyers contract, it allows GM the rights to the data for update and retrieval. But that means they can only use it for their purposes.
Simply put, if you are sure the car was faulty, make sure it is impounded to a neutral lot, and keep everyone away!!! Remember, the scanners can flash the memory clean!!!!!
Several years ago, a car rental agency had a GPS installed in their cars. They billed a renter several hundred dollars in "speeding tickets" for speeding... the problem - that monitoring was not expressly outlined in the rental contract!!!! They were SCREWED. As they should have been.
and yes, ODB III is a potential invasion of privacy... TMFI, in my opinion. The capture and retrieval processes scare the living hell out of me. I may never own a car with ODB III if they do that... it should not be allowed.
As for Jerome Brown's car... I remember that, being an Eagles fan... <sniff>... that airbag went off, yo. I remember pics.

It's not just C5's.
There are about 60 Million vehicles manufactured by Ford and GM with the black box out there.
