I would steer away from carpet... water, grease, metal shavings, toxic substances- not good.
There are some non-absorbant, rubber-like coatings out there that are designed specifically for garages- I just can't remember what they are or how expensive they'll be. Good luck.

My friend tiled his garage floor, but it couldn't stand up to what the floor jack could dish out. It looks like hell now. :nonod:

Here's a picture of a friends garage floor. Simple, but it looks great. It's hard to see, but she outlined the 2 parking places with red.

The prices are listed here on the ZR-1 net, which is a vendor for this product. You can click here on the link and it will take you to the store, and then click on the RaceDeck floor:

I did the black and white checker board tile in my last house and really liked it. Turned out very nice and cleans up easily. Any tiles damaged can be replaced easily....and are readily available at Home Depot or Lowe's. Didn't want to drop some serious change on the floor for the race deck or other systems...when I can put those $$$ into another vette! :)

Re: Garage Floor (Baaad96)
Don't paint the floor!!!! Its a waste. My dad painted ours and my heavy foot took it off in the trans am. Now there's burnout marks coming out of our garage :blueangel:

The floor soaks up all the grease and grime, a real bittch to clean up.

Re: Garage Floor (ROADRACER_)
How long is that hardwood floor going to last with a jack stand and a jack rolling around on it?

I used UCoatit and am not 100% pleased with the results. If you use it best results require at least 3 coats.
I know someone who has race deck, they've had problems getting the cars in and out w/o moving the flooring
