What's the deal with oil filters?
How many people use the Mobil 1 oil filters to go with their Mobil 1 oil? There was one on my car when I bought it but just put GM one back on. I recently seen a tread that GM makes an Ultragaurd filter, what would be the benefits? Shouldn't a person use the Mobil 1 filter since it is for Mobil 1 oil. The people at Mobil should know their oil better than anyone else at least how to filter it. Would the micron rating be any different than the Ultraguard do you think?

Mobil 1 oil filters rate well and are a wise choice. Personally, I prefer K&N Performance Gold oil filters.
I have used the AC Delco filters in the past without incident, but prefer the K&N. A filter manufacturer should state which oils the filter is compatible with ("regular", synthetic, or blended).

Lots of discussion as well as some research on this topic. One research study showed the AC Delco Ultraguard to be excellent in filtration, flow, pressure, etc. The Ultraguards for the LT1 engine were "discontinued" sometime last year but I scored a couple of cases which will keep me going for some time. The Ultraguards for the LS1 are still in production and I'm hoping that the ones for the LT1 will be brought back (I've sent my share of emails/letters to the company). A regular AC Delco is not all that bad and does a good job ... it's what I use in my other GM vehicles (non Vette).
The K&N also tested well as did the Mobil 1 filters. When I run out of my Ultraguards I will probably go with one of these unless someone has something better in production.

This is very interesting, not exactly the response I was expecting. I am surprised everyone prefers K&N, why is that? I figured Mobil 1 would be first in line since its the one engineering the filter for their oil. I would like to know the reason for everyones choice, magazine article, proven fact, what research do you have to back up your decision? Don't get me wrong, I respect everyones choice and replies to this thread. Just looking for a reason for the practically unanimous decision for K&N filters. Please keep the posts coming.......

One reason to use a K&N is honestly is that handy little nut welded on the bottom so you can remove it very easily.
Good, synthetic oil is good synthetic oil and a good filter is a good filter. Makes no difference who makes either one. You can mix or match forever and it just won't matter.
As far as the Mobil 1 filter goes, oil is oil no matter who makes it and no filter manufacturer can control what type or brand of oil is going to be used with his filter. Also, Mobil doesn't make the Mobil 1 filter, some other company (WIX?) makes it. Not that it's a bad filter, it's not. But it's no more designed for Mobil 1 oil and/or the Corvette than any other filter.
I'll admit I don't use Mobil 1 oil 'cause I think the label is ugly (no other reason), and that carrys over to their filter....so I'm shallow.....
(the K&N looks so cool....)

K&N has a lower micron rating than mobil1. I believe the K&N goes down to 15microns, while the mobil1 goes to 20microns.
Personally, I use the Bosch filters. 20microns and same construction as Mobil1, made by the same manufacturer as mobil1, about 1/2 price of Mobil1 filters here.

K & N here. I used the GM Ultraguard until Pep Boys no longer carried them. Actually, the K & N is cheaper, I pay 9.95 for them.

Re: What's the deal with oil filters? (Oly)
I buy all K&N gold air filters and oil filter for my chevy truck, vette, explorer but oil is mainly mobil 1.. I also like the nut but most of all I like the way the filters work and how safe they make me feel..
Piece of mind and they look cool.
