What's "LT" stand for?
OK, maybe I'm just supposed to know this off the top of my head, but I can't find anything in the manual that states what the initials LT stand for. So I have an LT-1...OK its a what?

I don't think it stands for anything, it's just the name of the engine. LT1 was also a high performance engine used from 1970-72.

In 1970 Corvette came out with a small block 370 hp with a code name LT-1. In 1971 the hp dropped to 330hp. In 1972 the LT-1 hp dropped to 255. In 1992 the second generation LT-1 was built which had 300 hp. Usually in the C4 years the LT-1 is an automatic also.

Re: What's "LT" stand for? (PIN DR)
Ok here is what it really means. LT1 is the RPO (regular production option) code for that particular engine. Everything on your car has an RPO code (look under you console lid) From the carpet to the engine and trans. For example the automatic is MX0 and the Manual 89-96 was MN6, and your gears start with a G, your suspension would be FE1 or FX3, not counting the ZO7 and Z51 People just refer to the code when talking about what engine they have. LT1's were the base engine for 92-96 corvettes the 84 had an L83, 85-91 base motor was L98, 90-95 ZR1 was LT5, and the upgraded engine in 96 was the LT4. These codes are intended for option ordering and helping your mechanic know what your car is equipped with. In your case LT1 means 300 Hp 350. Oh by the way LT1's were availiable in 6 speed from 92-95 they are not auto's only untill 96.

Its just a RPO name for the engine.
LT could also mean longtube headers in context

So basically... nobody answered your question!
I was just looking at my blackbook.... and it seems that options were listed as numbers only until 1963. IE, in 1962 the 360 hp fuelie was listed as "582". In 1963 the L designation shows up for the first time: L75 = 300hp, L76 = 340 hp, L84 = 360 hp fuelie. Also, the RPOs are listed in alphabetical order, so the letter "L" may have been randomly assigned to designate engine options. It is tempting to assume the "M" in M20 and M21 stands for "Muncie", or manual, but M35 is the powerglide automatic, so I am guessing M is the letter for transmission options. MJ

I'm surprised nobody has pointed this out.
The early 70's engine is the LT-1 (with hyphen)
The 92-96 engine is the LT1 (no hyphen)
As for what it means, it's just an internal code that became jargon.
