I had a 84 with the 4+3 transmission and i really enjoyed owning it. I had it from summer of 2001 to summer of 2002. I sold it after i bought my 91. To be honest with the 4+3 i think the 84 is a fun and pretty quick car. I have a automatic now with 2.59's and while it definitely has more kick it is not as much as you may think. I sold my 84 leass than a year ago for just shy of 6,000 bucks and it burned oil, needed a power steering rack and paint was starting to go. If you dont want to buy one in nice shape for 3500 let me know where it is and i'll buy it. Thats a good deal and its a good car. As with any 20 year old car you will have to make repairs if you plan to drive it frequently as you state. Still that will be true for an 85 as well. I have the latest and greatest L98 engine (the 91 version) with a borla cat-back and i still think the 84 is near as strong in the SOTP department with a stick. Of course i need a new gear ration i am thinking 3.07. Then i think the 91 will be far and away different in the SOTP department. Anyways buy it at 3500 you cant go wrong.

Welcome.... IMHO the best thing you can do to a 84 is take the gas cap off, drive a 96' GS under it and put it back on..
But good luck doing that for $3,500.. Honestly, that's a good deal and even I would jump on it. They are not that bad, they have their problems just like all the other years.. :seeya

I like the 86 and up better only because of the TPI, but for that price thats a heck of a bargain! I have heard they are great cars for autocross. Go for it, just make sure there are no major leaks. Good Luck!

A lot of people may be critical of the 84, but it's basically because getting horsepower out of it is difficult and expensive. If you're going to be happy with its performance as-is, then by all means go for it. At $3500, you're going to have a fantastic daily driver.
Hell, at $3500, even though you're going to have to spend a lot of money to mod it, you'll still probably wind up money ahead. Just don't think that you're going to be able to slap a few bolt-ons and run 13s. The cease-fire injection is a huge restriction, and so are the heads.
Just make sure that the car is in as good of shape as it seems. It can be very expensive to take care of a lot of "little things".

thanks for all the replies people.
i am gonna go give it a good once-over today, and make sure there is no mjor damage i have missed. hopefully i'll be driving it home today! :chevy
as for performance, i'm not worried about it with this car. 200 horses is ok with me for a daily driver. i have my '79 C3 that's gonna get a 427 in a few months, so there will be my high speed transport. :auto:
p.s. i love that digital dash! :steering:

Yep, the `84s are the first seriously cool C4 vettes. Digital dash, clamshell hood, those cool collapsing radio antennas we all take for granted, ageless looks and arguably one of the best factory suspensions ever produced- not to mention 300 foot-pounds of torque. We all forget that once upon a time, the 1984 crossfire was rated the fasted, best handling production car EVER produced (Car & Driver?); it may have been 20 years ago, but: as with wine, they get better with age!
Pounce on it baby!

141K on the clock for me. My '84 is also my daily driver now. Doesn't smoke, burn oil, and still has plenty of power.
Good luck with what ever year model you buy.
