96 Coupe Rear Window Drain Kit - opinions please
Hi There!
We would greatly appreciate hearing from anyone who has an opinion (good or bad) regarding the 1984-96 Coupe Rear Window drain Kit that is available through Eckler's. We are trying to decide whether or not to purchase one.
Thanks!

I heard once that it may make the area prone to cracks if you drill a hole there but I don't know for sure.
I just blow mine out with compressed air after I wash it

I bought that kit but have yet to use it. Before I had my car painted I pulled out the rear hatch weatherstrip, split the corners doing it, good thing I had new to replace it. So I had plenty of room to drill the hole but if I remember right it takes a really looong drill bit. Also your drilling through 2 body panels. The first is the interior of the hatch area and the second you can see if you pull off your inner tire splash shields. Bad thing is the 2nd panel is sloped right at the corner to the rear so you have to drill on a slope  .
I found out the hard way and drilled one hole through the first layer and took a metal wire and poked it down to find the length. Its just not worth it IMHO.

I used them in my 88 and loved them. No more water collecting in the corner when it rained. I think it makes the weather stripping last longer too since it keep it dryer. If it lives in a garage then it doesn't matter. I drive my cars.

just out of curiusity do the verts have this built in under the deck lid?? I was waxing mine tonight and noted i had the drains there. The water flowed right to them and out by the wheel wells. Does anyone know if my car came like this from the factory or was it an add on. I think it must have came that way because when you was it its inevitable water collects under the lid when you spray the car down.

I use a small plastic syringe to suck the water out of this area on my 95 coupe. (A very small plastic turkey baster would work also.) Just suck out the water and dry with towel.
The thought of drilling holes in this area and the possible problems that could arise later with cracks, etc send cold shivers down my spine.
Here is an opportunity for some TLC and bonding with your car.

The first time I parked on a hill, after a hard rain with the back end higher than the front the hatch area had about 2 inches of water in it. the way the car was sitting caused the water to run in thru the corners at the front of the hatch.
usually the car never leaks. even washing I don't get any water.
I installed the drains ASAP, haven't had the problem again, no mater how its parked.
Install was smiple: bored hole thru plastic--or--fiberglass about one inch back from targa bar. (used regular length bits) small first--- then bigger last. kept drill chuck lined up with angle of fender. put masking tape around area so drill would not scar paint, (just in case) after boring thru both layers used a wire to run thru hole, wire was used to guide tubing thru, put brass fitting on tube, used plummers putty (silicone will work) on bottom of fittin to make a good seal.
one of the easiest and best mods I've done.
I'll give it a 2

I installed them on my 96 a few years ago... No problems with leaks anymore and I haven't seen any stress cracks develop... She's been lifted many times and over roads that twist the body pretty good...
You just have to be very careful drilling the holes... I almost scratched the paint on the first one when the bit finally broke through the bottom surface and the drill dropped... I caught it, but the chuck would have left a nasty mark on the surrounding area... The teeth where the chuck key would ride came right to the edge of the "V" in the body corner...
I did it because I used to frequently park where the rear end was higher and the water would leak in if it built up high enough and the car sat for awhile...

If you drive your car in the rain at all then it is definitely worth it . After all who wants to carry a turkey baster around with them every time it rains!!! :hurray:

I have heard the turkey baseter too! I could see I am out shopping in the rain it is raining so I don't want the water to splash into the back and have yet more water in there so I get out my baseter thing and start trying to get ahead of the rain. :nonod:
They are a great idea if installed correctly I have had to fix 2 cars now where they only go through the first layer and cram them in. :(
Oh well
