Quick Tire Question
Is it advisable to put a 275/40/17 on a 8.5 inc rim?
Reason I mention it is that I acquired a set of early C5 whaeels with rear tires in good shape. I want to switch my khumo MX's from the rear sawblades on to the C5 fronts

Re: Quick Tire Question (95vett)
from tirerack http://www.tirerack.com/tires/Spec.j...model=Ecsta+MX the recommended rim width for 275/40R17 is 9-11 inches

Re: Quick Tire Question (95vett)
If I remember correctly, 8.5" would be the MINIMUM rim width for that size tire. It certainly would not be the OPTIMUM width.
You could get away with it, but you would get better performance going to a 10" or so.... Seeing as how you are 'mixing and matching', then you aren't looking for the nth degree of performance, so...yeah, you can do it.
That's a pretty wide tire for the front, tho'..........

Like stated above, it will fit, but it won't be the optimum wheel width to use. A 9.5 would be better.
It's the same as putting a 315 on a 9.5 rim, not the ideal width, but it can be done.

Might be like driving home from the track with 10psi in DR's, back end floating all over the place.

Re: Quick Tire Question (95vett)
Don't do it.
The tire will not be able to do its job properly and your handling will suffer. Ideally you want a tire that sits nice and square on the rim. Bigger is not always better, and certainly not in this case.

MY 95 HAS 8.5 rims up front. i want 9.5 all the way around. can i put my 255/45/17 on the new 9.5 rims since i just got the tires a month ago? this is kinda putting a smaller tire on the larger rim, the opposite of what he's wanting to do. but i wanted to ask anyhow.
