Turns-Out, I need cam bearings, rod bearings, and main. The block is stripped down to nothing...I wish i could find more info on this.... would it be safe if i took the block to a car wash, and went at it with hot pressurized h2o, and some degreaser I bought? It's coming back to the shop right away, and ill blow out every nook a kranny i can!! I'm going to lube cylinder walls, lifter journals. And any other machined, or flat surface i can find. My machine shop wants $160 to clean the block, and I find that's crazy. Before lifters, cam timing cover, etc. was taken off, I used brake clean and a brush and really made some progress... and i feel the pressure at te car wash should work?? Please let me know..

In my opinion for 160 bucks I would let the machine shop do the cleaning

It's more trouble than it's worth.
You won't get into everywhere the hot tank will.
The block is going to rust much faster than you can imagine.
How much does the magniflux cost? I thought cleaning and magnifluxing were done/priced together?
How about cam bearings and freeze plugs?
Get one price and have it all done. You might go to the car wash and they don't want to start work until it's been through the hot tank.

I’ll restate my answer from your other thread. This is not the place to pinch pennies. The hot tank will boil everything up and out. Pressure washing might work well enough to get the gum off the outside but that is not the important part. Making it look good is not the reason to do it. Getting the years of crap out of the oil and coolant passages with all the plugs removed is. They will then install new freeze plugs, which guess what, won’t leak 10k miles after your build. They will probably do the MPI (magnaflux) as part of it. Sometimes you have to trust the experts and do what needs to be done. This is one of those times.

They may not do the work without them cleaning it, it's a liability deal for them .. When you're cleaning it you're going to loosen something up and it might go into something after it's built oil passage something way too much money and work to take any changes and besides if trash gets into something and causes a problem .it' on them ..

Take it to the shop. Make sure they take all plugs. Ask if the price includes installing new cam bearings, it should, otherwise you have to buy a cam bearing installation tool.

Machine shop..
There cooking/cleaning block, installing freeze plugs, cam bearings, and honing the cylinders. Also putting new rings on each piston. And there doing both heads, (Aluminum) cleaning, pressure testing (has been performed, and checked out, Okay), 3 angle cut, valve spring pocket work, COMP beehives, COMP retainers, COMP seals, COMP guide plates, COMP pushrods.. compcompcompcomp!!! checking all guides (Everything a valve job entails). They have built my engines since 2001, done dozens of heads, flywheels, and even removing broken studs.............. I totally trust these guys. And!, thanks for all of the replies. I sorta wanted the shop to do most of it, but limited budget puts constraints on any project requiring dead presidents.. Hoping to have some pictures.. machine shop explained things will be finished middle of next week.
