Default Question about bypassing the vats

I'd like to bypass the vats on my 96 and the resistor on my key is 1.86 ohms. I went to a few electronic stores and they don't carry a 1.86 resistor. They sell resistors with different ranges. So I'll have to buy a few and wire them in series to get close to 1.86. Does the resistor value need to be on the spot of 1.86 for this to work?

No.

I just did mine a couple of weeks ago.

Mine needed to be 1.46 and I was able to find a 1.46 resistor.

But, yeah, you can double em up if you have to.

I had the same ''range'' question that you had, and a lot of helpful folks chimed in when I asked about it.

Looks like yours is #7. So anything in a range between 1795 and 1965 on yours will crank it over.

Here's a chart that was shared from that thread...

It's worth remembering that there is starter kill, and also an injector kill. The injector kill has to be bypasses via the ECU.

Terminology is important in electronics. They are not 1.86 they are 1.86k (or in this case 1.87K).

Get one of the 400mw or 250mw through holes. https://www.newark.com/yageo/mfr-25f...K5955?st=1.87k

Okay, determine your key code and just buy the corresponding resistor module from a supporting vendor. Plug and play. The end.

Just an.idea to eliminate the common failure and keeping vats. Typically one of the 2 little wires keeping compromised at the lock cylinder over time. You could get replacement cylinder mount it somewhere under the dash install and old key in it, Cut cheapie steel keys for use. If car is parked for extended periods of time or unsecured location; pellet key could be removed causing vats to operate if unauthorized users try to take car. To really get around vats it needs to be turned off in the pcm programming.. (prom)

Most people are scared of wiring/electrical work.

Why delete vats in the first place. Fix what is wrong with tour car properly.

That would have been my preference, but look where my wire broke. It's just too close to splice. Like a dumb ***, I wasn't careful enough to keep an eye on the cylinder so it wouldn't drop and hang by the wires when I was replacing that mutifunction switch a ways back. It's a pretty heavy cylinder for those two little thin wires and the sudden stop at the end of the fall is what snapped it.

I am kind of casually keeping an eye out for a lock cylinder and key with the right resistance so I can redo it right, though.

I don't know how or even if that cylinder can be taken apart, else I would go that route and repair the break that way.

Well 'm glad you pointed it out because I've clearly been overthinking it to the point of ingoring common sense. Thanks for pointing it out. What the heck. Now I'm kind of chuckling at myself here.

Yep, you know your current VATS code. A lock cylinder isn’t that expensive and buy two appropriate value key blanks and you are good to go. Sounds like you are already familiar with the column guts.
