Default Vintage Racing a Corvette Challenge Car.

Been having a blast vintage racing #22 our 1988 Corvette Challenge Car! Here’s some pics from the 2023 season at Portland International Raceway and Pacific Raceways.

I thought the shift points were at 52 or 5300, and that is what I did the first three race weekends on this car, then we did a Dyno pull and found out that really 4500 is about the sweet spot. Not to say I don’t take it up to 5000 if necessary… But the car has tons of torque and for this car it’s not necessary to run it out that high.

It is hard not to take it higher, I usually race our 1960 Corvette. Shift points are about 7000. Original Rochester Fuel injected with about a 12 to 1 compression, I’m used to a loud car. 🤣

the 60 may be louder, and feel faster up to 122 mph down the straight on big drum brakes with 6” wide wheels, but the C4 is the faster car by seconds per lap and so far has topped out at 131 mph.

That's a beautiful Challenge car! Doesn't get better than that on the track in an early C4!

As I understand it, the CC cars has special (identically tuned) engines in them that were reclaimed when the series was over. What engine do you have in yours?

They did. This car has the original engine rebuilt on a stand & I’m running a race prepped ZZ4 w/TPI. It looks pretty stock to an untrained eye, but it’s not.

It is not super powerful, but the car performs very well on leaded 110 octane with straight pipes. Sound is great.

I have run it in a couple of different groups. More fun for me in small bore, as the car can run at the front of the grid, versus large bore where I am a moving mogul with cars running 2 and 3 times as much power!

I think the class I am in is GT1 regardless of group.

thank you to everyone who has responded and complimented me on this car. It’s the most fun I’ve ever had with my clothes on.
🤣

The maintenance isn’t too bad on the 88 vs. the 60. These C4’s were designed as race cars, where the C1-C3 were sports cars that get heavily modified to be good race cars.

Considering that it’s a race car, you have to stay on top of maintenance if you want the car to run well.

The next time you have the '88 on the lift, could you please post (lots) more pictures of the the undercarriage front to back....also engine compartment and finally the interior!? It would be nice to see the whole car inside and out!!!! I think the reason you don't see many posts about these, is because, although most of us think they're frickin sweet and would love to own one, the reality is, 99.9% of us will never have the chance or the pleasure to own one! Anyway, I would really appreciate a photo shoot of the whole car, I think that would generate more conversation and interest!👍
edit: I just realized I was responding to your other post I read before, basically you posed the question (paraphrasing) "why isn't there more talk about these Challenge cars"....my bad, but still stand by my photos request!

thanks for bumping the thread, and heck yea. When I get the car back from race prep after the last session of the season I certainly will. In the meantime, here’s a little sneak peak of the rear after we put the straight pipes on. There is a flange so I can attach either mufflers or the straight pipes pending the decibel limit at the track.

I always had Corvette Challenge stickers on mine though it wasn't in the series. We would have wanted to be though!
