Default Hypertech chip in an 84?

Is it worth the $160+ to put in the hypertech chip? I know my father put one in his after he got it. I don't remember if it made a difference or not. I know that the thermostat has to be changed to a lower temp one. Just trying to see if it is worth it. If you don't like the 84 please keep your negative comments to yourself. I bought one knowing what it is and all about the Crossfire Injection. My father has had his since 1986 and hasn't had any problems with it. Thanks.

If your 84 is not a z51 then change your rear gear ratio to at least the 3.07 gear. Have you done any exhaust mods yet? Those 2 items will make a big difference.

I just got the car 2 weeks ago. I have not been driving it other than when I picked it up and brought it home. I have been working on little things I want to get done before it goes into storage. It is not a Z51. I do not know what has been done to the car by the previous owners- the guy I got it from inherited it from his aunt and didn't know anything about cars. It is a bit sluggish on take off but will chirp the tires from 1st to 2nd. I was thinking it has a shift kit in the trans. I do want to do the muffler delete. I am not to keen on replacing the rear end. But that may happen. Thanks.

You don't have to replace the rear end. Just get new gears for it. For the money it's probably the best mod your going to do. Even if you can't swap gears yourself it usually isn't that expensive to have done.

An exhaust is nice mostly to help with the drone. The factory 84 mufflers are horrible for drone inside the car. One thing that really woke up my 84 when I first got it was a cam. Lots of good budget options to choose from. Swap in a mild cam and some better gears it'll feel like a whole different machine. You will of course need a tune for any of this. So I wouldn't go with Hypertech. I would see if anyone will make a prom for it. If not then an adapter harness with an aftermarket ECU. That's how I did it.

Ok I just confirmed that I have the 3.07 gears. I looked at my rpo sticker. So then I should just do a muffler delete?

It's your car. Do what you want. What do you want out of it? For me I went with 3.73's and an LS swap. But I need 500 hp to get a gallon of milk for some reason. Maybe you don't.

Gears are a great way of getting more usable power out of the car. I think 3.07's are yes better than other ratios GM used but I would go with at least a 3.5ish or more.

Before you start on the road of modifications take some time to read old posts here. The search function is your friend with these old cars. I love the 84. In fact it's probably my favorite of the C4's. It just has a lot of quarks and is a great platform for modification. Just know what you want before you start. But if you change your mind part way through, well that's part of the fun.

I would second the 3:54.1 or the 3:451 gear set, also the long tube headers and is you are not going into the block swap on some 1:6:1 roller rocker arms to give your stock cam more lift. It would be nice to put new valve springs if the car has higher mileage. Good Luck...
