C4 and passing smog
Looking at a couple C4’s on BringATrailer and curious if they need any special equipment to pass CA smog?
*especially earlier C4s*
Talking stock cars here. I know there are “CA emissions” option packages. If it doesn’t have that will it not pass here?

The rule for California smog is an out of state car is allowed in the state as long as it has its Federally required smog equipment. If it is an original California car it must have the stricter CA cat and any other equipment. There are different numbers on non CA cats that stations are required to verify as part of the CA smog check.
Here's how I found out about a cheaper way to get a CA smog. I bought a 93 Jeep from Arizona. Smog guy in CA wouldn't pass me because I had a 49 state legal cat (CA being that 1 state). I called the California smog referee. They scheduled me an appointment at the state smog station. They are at the automotive section of the community colleges. I took it to the ref. Showed him the previous AZ registration. He hooked the machine up and passed it. It only costs $8.25 for the state to smog it. People fear the referee, but he was just a regular guy and had the same machine the gas stations do. I took it back there the next time it was required and it was 8.25 again.

Should be fine. I do HIGHLY recommend though that you ensure that you have a new, fresh tank of gas when you go for the smog check. If the gas in the tank has been there a long time it does affect the ability to pass - I experienced this firsthand on my '89.
