LEATHER SEAT CARE HELP NEEDED
my wife finally got her dream car for Christmas, a white '94 coupe. one of the most attractive aspects of this little jewell are the beautuful gray leather seats that show no real wear. As I shopped for a car one of the first things i looked at was the leather seats to see if the they were well cared for. what should I do to maintain them over the years ahead? how much life can I expect from a set if the car is driven almost daily? Does anybody have any good words of wisdom on leather seat care you would care to share. The car is a beauty as is my wife. I want to maintain them both as best as I can.

It's tempting to let your backside lean on the rear outside and slide down into the seat. Needless to say, this will cause wear on the leather. I try to climb into the seat without any squirming. Also, I don't use the padded compartment cover for a lift point. Mine has come unglued and it needs to be taken off and cleaned and reglued.

The 94's leather won't wear as easily as the earlier years which is good. Mink oil should keep it moist and glistening.

May I share a little tip. Whether this happens may be dependant on the driver's size...but when you unbuckle the seat belt (to get out of the car), guide it all the way back carefully. Don't just let it zip back. On my car it gets caught on the edge of the seats and has worn holes through the seat covers.

I use Lexol. There is a cleaner and a separate conditioner. It is available from Eastwood.com.

Lexol makes a very nice product line for leather. I also like to use Race Glaze leather conditioner on the seats as well - it does not have the overbearing artificial leather-like scent that some other products have; it smells more like vanilla and it does a nice job at conditioning.

Which conditioner works best on dark leather? My seats are perforated, and I tried using some Mequiar's (it was all they had), but the conditioner builds up in the perforations, and dries white. Is there a darker conditioner, or perhaps a better way of applying it? I try to dab it on a porous cloth first, so I can rub on a thin even coating.

Armor All now makes leather conditioner. I started using it on my seats about 3 months ago. They were dry looking and feeling. Now they seem much more supple and dark (they're black).

An uhpolstery guy told me to use baby oil on my dry seats. I was a little skeptical, but tried it anyway. It did seem to soften up the leather and smells better than mink oil :D
Best part is baby oil is only a couple of bucks. I have black seats, so I'm not sure how it would work on colors

I use Lexol twice a year... cleaner, and conditioner.
Meguires now has leathe "wipes" that I use monthly. It only takes a quick "wipe" to use them, and they keep the leather looking great.
Go shopping at Pep Boys... :lolg:
