Hello from Portland
Hey jpar here...
LOoking for a c4...
I have a couple garage queens.. (Mopar stuff..) and I'm putting to many miles on my wife's new car...
I remember really liking my 93 trans am (with Corvette LT1) and those are not easy to find around here under 10k in decent condition... Then I thought Camero???.. same thing..
Then I noticed you couldn't swing a cat without hitting a c4 under 10k... Childhood memories of a vet... Okay my search has begun... I've been looking and I have narrowed my search..
Must: coupe no convertible.. I want it's a little bit of extra room and this will be outside as well..
I don't want the first couple years with crossfire injection as I had that in my 82 trans am and it couldn't get out of its own way. Reliable yes but power no..
About me I privately help people restore them sounded vehicles pre-79 stuff without major computer but I do help people with throttle body fuel injection and stuff like that but not a guru at that more a carburetor person...
I can work on vehicles I just finished a frame off restoration on a 1974 power wagon. I'm talking powder-coated frame I rebuilt the transfer case the automatic transmission assembled the engine put every last wire in and every last grade eight nut and bolt.. when I needed a hand my wife was glad to help but that was all besides a machine shop to board the engine and a line-up shop for perfect alignment...
Just so you have an idea of my skills...
Any advice or help or things to stay away from or things to try and get would be helpful. I noticed the better the condition of any year the better. Some people like the Opti some people don't.
Right now I have my eye on a 89 6-speed with just under 100,000 miles but it's been snowing here pretty bad and I won't be able to look at it for another week or two...
Thank you for everybody's time and experience...

Welcome, and I am going to move this over to the C4 General section where other C4 owners can give you some advice concerning your desire to purchase a C4.

Have you checked out the one in my post here? Not that far from you and looks pretty nice. I understand if you want a ZF trans but the 4+3 is a good trans if it has been serviced properly.

It's not my car. I just thought it looked promising so thought I'd share with anyone looking. No connection to the owner.

A few thoughts...
The l98 6 speed cars are fairly rare, and a few guys really like them. Personally, I'd try to flex my budget to get a 6 speed lt1 car. They're a lot faster, and while the optispark is it's weak point, they're really not that bad to replace. It's been my experience that they're fairly reliable le as long as you don't do something stupid to it with water.

Welcome! I am about 30min from Portland. We are under about 8” of snow today. When I was searching for my C4 last year, I couldn’t find what I was looking for locally. Ended up having one shipped across the country. Good luch with your search!

All told we got about 10 in but we're down to about 6 now. I am thinking of expanding my budget and my search area. I don't want to end up buying one for near 9000 and ended up putting another three or four into it I just rather spend 12 now and have everything perfect to start with..

Hey Jpar,
I think I know the one you're looking at and I think you should jump on it. If it's the black one, then take a good look. It has two auspicious telltales: Sport seats and the rotary **** on the console. This is an FX3 car and is likely a Z51 as well. Since it has FX3, it's actually not a full Z51, since they hadn't certified that suspension with those shock in time, so it'll have softer springs, which actually might not be a bad thing.
At any rate, I believe this car represents the pinnacle of the C4 experience. It's the last year of the awesomely 80s digital dash, it still has the superior original body style, and it benefits from the massive transmission upgrade to the ZF. And as this example probably has all the go-fast options, it's really the best of the best. There's the wimpy auto convertible end of the spectrum and then at the other end sits this car. Plus it has two tops! Seriously, jump on this ******. If I hadn't just bought one I'd be strapping on my snow shoes right about now.
I'd give the car a real lookover and verify that the FX3 is fully functional. If it's not, that's reason to drop the price considerably. I've never bought a car from a dealership so I don't know how flexible they are but I'd go in offering 7,500 for this if it's fully funtional and see what happens. Worst they can say is we're holding your family hostage.

I told them it's going to have to pass deq here in Oregon or it's worthless to me.. it's only an hour away.. on top of that I'm pretty sure that black car does not have good working air condition which is a must for me.... That's likely another thousand if I'm lucky on top of the $400 for tax title license plates Multnomah fee for $112 blah blah blah.. no I'm 9 Grand into this car and it has a massive scratch on the passenger side going from the door all the way to the top of the rear fender well that someone lipstick painted over. It's sat for quite a number of years before the dealer bought it from a state sale and fix some things on it to get it going again.. like I said they're all over the place there's another one with a private owner of second owner he's only owned it a year from the first owner and it's a complete cream puff for 12 k a 93 automatic... At this point I'm not sure where I'm going but I'm pretty much sold on spending an extra couple grand for somebody's cream puff before I spend my money twice...
