Interesting.... Motorweek did an episode with two stock Corvettes (one auto and one manual 4+3)back in 85, and the auto was quicker. YouTube link is below. Great episode....

Two reasons ^There^.
1. Motorweek (and ALL car testing publications (outside of Fast Fords & Muscle Mustangs) don't know how to drive sticks, and drive like pussies. That puts the stick at a disadvantage b/c in a 230hp car all you need to do in an auto car is push a pedal all the way to the floor, to get the best time (or damn close to it).
2. The early C4 sticks, the 4+3, is a rough, clunky shifter. Harder to shift it FAST.

But mostly it's the driver(s).

Stock for Stock. Manual all day. Find a automatic LT1 that runs consistent 13.5's and 13.4's and the occasional dip into the 13.3's. I'll wait...

^Yep. Hell, find one that runs a 13.anything! Some probably exist, but I ain't seen it at the track.

I just watched an episode of Roadkill; Finnegan got a C2 with an LS1 and he met Dulcich at a drag track in SoCal to race. Dulcich brought a '00ish C5 Auto Vert. Dulcich ran a 13.5/105. I'VE ran at 13.5/105....in Vegas (2200' elevation), with an engine rated at 50 less hp!

Stick FTW

Default The old Auto vs Stick war !!!!

There are so many factors to that equation!!! All the drag racers I know all run Auto’s , it’s just constancy. The big boys all have high dollar autos . Stock year model vs yr model c4’s though ultimately comes down to two things in my humble opinion. #1 is rear gearing . Close #2 , if not actually #1 is driver . It certainly take more skill for a stick car to get down the 1320 ft then it does a pcm driven 4l60e car . A good stick guy would touch the clutch once at the tree and power shift every gear ( the stick cars are almost always a steeper rear gear also ) !
I personally have an Auto car but it is looooooong since been close to stock . I’m making over 500 both horse and torque ( Golen 396 stroker .) which disintegrated my slightly built 4l60e on the first real rip for my tuner . 3/4 clutch gone at 122mph . I have now invested in Allen and Franks Race 2 4l6Oe from Performabuilt. Very nice 700 rwhp Dyno checked unit . We will see here in a few weeks how we do at pacific raceways up here in Seattle . I will post a N/A slip and a 200 Shot slip . If I make it to a second run without a cage ???? I still believe I need gears in my fresh Dana 44 swap . But I am Gonna run what I brung this summer ( do the 3.73 swap for a winter project ) oh 3.07’s is what came in the 44 . So that also will be fun 🤩 for some 3.07 numbers . I appreciate everyone of my C4 forum Brothers and ummm ( sisters ) thanks for all the great knowledge and Amazing part purchases !
GOD bless ,
Robert

Ditto with my '87
I could never 60ft as consistent with the stick as after I did the auto swap .
