Default 16 Inch Tires - Availability- Choices

My ‘86 has the stock wheels, the wider versions for Z52 and Sport Suspension. It looks as if my choices are limited, and I would like to keep the stock wheels. Any suggestions ? I’m not looking to spend a lot but obviously would like a decent tire.

The only tires I found for my 87 were BFG Comp2 255 50 16 I got mine from Sams. They were the only tires for on road use.

Pickin’s are slim, JR. Thanks for the input. My wife told me I don’t need tires. I guess if anyone would know, she would. Shes such an automotive guru. Funny thing, she put a nail in one tire and bought all four so they’d match . The haves and the have nots. In case you’re wondering, I’ m the have not.

The BFG 255s are a great tire. Just bought all 4 for 520 dollars. I didn’t think that was too bad

So far the BFG’s are about all I’ve seen too. At least every one says they’re a good tire. I was hoping to find something “ less expensive “.

Hi, I think 245/50r16 cannot go with 9" rim (Z52)... At least this useful site says so: https://tiresize.com/tiresizes/255-50R16.htm

You CAN put them on the 9.5" rim. I know because the PO installed them on my '84 Z51 (with the 9.5" rims on the rear) right before I got the car.

They fit and they do ok - as I've put a few thousand miles on them. BUT I wouldn't recommend them. These cars (MY 84-87) were designed for 255s and that's what should be on them. First chance I get, I'm changing mine and getting those BFGs.

I once bought some 245’s but never installed them. I think they were for a Camaro or Mustang. My Mustang SVO had 16’s on it, i think my Taurus SHO did too. The stock Goodyears were atrocious. It pretty surprising that there are so few options available for 16” tires as there were a lot of cars using that size . It would seem like it would be an opportunity for the smaller tire makers.

If you look at BFGs rim width reccomendation they tell you a 9" is the max on the width too... meaning a Z51 rim is a half inch wider than what it should be mounted on in the stock tire size. I can attest to the BFG being a an good tire though.

I can’t picture 1/2” causing a problem and I can’t picture me losing any sleep over it.
