1993 Corvette, Smoke Show, What Happened?
OK, I backed my Corvette out of the garage today and it was idling in the driveway as I was getting my Pressure cleaner out.
I started to smell a strong burning smell, I turned around and there was smoke billowing out from under the hood.
I got in the car to shut it off and there was smoke also coming out of the A/C Vents.
I opened the hood and it looked like the A/C Compressor was the culprit but I am not 100% sure.
There were no flames and no fire, everything in the engine compartment looks okay.
I waited a little while and started the car and drove it back into the garage and that's where it sits.
The garage stinks like smoke.
My question is Has anyone ever experienced anything like this before?
The car's A/C was converted from R12 to 134a about 2 years ago.
My A/C compressor is the Original as the car is very low mileage....
I appreciate any and all replies.......Thank You, Drew

You probably sucked the smoke in through the fresh air intake. So what did you find out? But if you think its the compressor it could have seized and you burned the AC clutch or the belt. If that's the case be lucky it should be easy to fix any garage could do that you need a new compressor and a proper AC flush or restore. There are known compatibility issues if you don't purge the old AC out correctly, and the oils are not compatible. conversion has to be done with a careful process. That why I just took the EPA test and stayed with R12. No issues.

Thank You for your response......I haven't taken the car anywhere yet. I think my compressor failed, it has a very bad burned smell to it......
I will post my finding's when I take the car to the shop.......Thanks

I had it happen to me in the middle of Lancaster CA. In a Ford Explorer. Compressor locked up while sitting at a stoplight. God awful noise and smoke from burning rubber.
Turned of the A/C and drove home. Replaced the compressor and belt and all was well again.

AC clutch. Is there gooey stuff near clutch or on hood?
If compressor locked up, it generally will burn belt up too.
I think its the AC clutch.. Easy repair. Buy a good one. Dont be cheap..
