Default Is the vette transmission (700r4) the same as a GM 1500 truck?

I have a quick question
Is the vette transmission (700r4) the same as a GM 1500 truck?
I know that the vette has a differnt servo, and the tail shaft housing is differnt.

But it is possible to use a Trans from a 1992 Vette, chang the tailshaft housing, and put it in a 89' Chevy 4x2 PU?

thanks

I want to say yes. I sold a 700 trans out of my Iroc to a guy who put it in his pickup. I belive he just changed the tailshaft.

There might be some minor differences in internals, but it should fit in there just fine. I know of the differences you listed, but cant think of another.

Maybe try running a search, ive seen this come up before.

Change the tailstock and the speedometer drive gear from the old trans. Make sure the plastic drive gear goes in the same location it is in in the doner trans.

TCI seems to think they are different.

700R4
A=30-3/4"
700-R4 & 4L60E (1993-1995) (Bellhousing-Chevy V8); S-10 & S-15 V6, all ex. Corvette

Corvette
A=29-7/8"

TCI offers a Streetfighter transmission as a direct bolt-in replacement for the C4-platform Corvette OEM 700-R4. These units have a specific tailhousing assembly and a 1.125" shorter output shaft than a standard 700-R4 transmission. These units contain the same components provided in all Streetfighter transmissions.

I think, even in that picture, that its the tailshaft housing that is different (Which is a bolt on part), I just want to mae sure the tailshaft (shaft) is not differnent in length..

Also what year did they go to the computer controled version, also are the lockup converter plugs differnt between years?

thanks!

4L60 designation started in 92 or 93. The 4L60E was the 94 model year.

Fraid there is a difference in lengths. This diagram is from the ATSG THM 700R4 rebuild manual. Many tranny builders simply cut about an inch or so off the output shaft if the tranny is going in a Vette. I sold my 85 Vette tranny to a guy with a TransAm who just put it in after fabricating a rear mount bracket. The drive shaft had enough length to compensate for the shorter shaft on the Vette 700R4.

PS the speedo mounting clip holes: the one closest to the outer end of the shaft is for Vette, the inner for all other vehicles. All shafts have both holes.

Shoot: I'v got a good scan, ftpd it to my ISP, now can't figure out how to get it here. Hellllp

I believe the Vette 700R4 is the only one that will remain in overdrive at full throttle. Or atleast thats what I have been told.

Default Re: Is the vette transmission (ZAD54)

I tore apart four transmissions to see what the difference is between the vette 700r4 and the pickup 700r4 transmissions. I even experimented to see if the pickup trans could work in a vette.

The major difference in utilizing the pickup trans in the vette is that the output shaft is slightly over 3/4 inch longer on the pickup trans. One could easily cut and grind the end of the pickup trans to make it work. Also the tailshaft of the vette trans has to be utilized to mount the C beam. The VSS speedo gear and drive assembly in the vette also has to be utilized. These small mods will allow the pickup trans to be used in the vette.

There are also some other differences. The valve body assembly is totally different with more solenoids and other items that are unique to the vette. The pickup oil pan and filter assembly also are different and cannot be exchanged. And if I am not mistakened, the vette lockup converter must be utilized with the vette trans and cannot be properly utilized in the pickup transmission. due to the valve body and solenoid assembly difference.

I beleive that putting the vette trans in the pickup is a little more complicated since the computers of both vehicles are different and the computer in the pickup cannot properly operate the vette transmission. That also goes with the speedo drive assembly which is a VSS in the vette system. Also the long bed pickups (2wd) utilize a 2 piece driveshaft which has a bolted on transmission yoke. The vette output shaft is not threaded for this use. I am not sure about the two wheel drive shortbed model.

Those are the only major differences. We did try a pickup trans in the 86 vette to see if it would hold up. The trans shifts are mushy and lockups in overdirve are non existent. We drove the car hard on occsssion and after a couple of months driving, the trans gave up. I am not sure what the cause of it was. But the donor pickup only had 40,000 miles on the odometer. The symptoms of the failure was a loss of 3rd and 4th gears. I have not torn down that trans yet to see what the cause was.

Internally, the vette trans had a wider band and the pump looked a little different. The servo piston was also different. And I beleive the clutches had some slight differences. I did not notice anything else that was particularly different. However some year vettes had planetary gear differences.
Most of the parts will interchange though when rebuilding either model.

The most desired vette 700r4 trans is the 87 and later model since it has the beefier updated components.

We converted one of our 86 vettes to a TH400. That conversion was a pain in the butt and is a whole other story.

If you are in a jam, the pickup trans will suffice in the vette with slight modifications. However, going the other way is probably not a good idea. I would reccomend buying a beefed up 700r4 trans designed for the pickup. The higher cost of buying a vette specific 700r4 would negate any advantages of trying to use the vette trans since the extra dollars could be more wisely used to buy a modded pickup specific trans.
