Default Brake "clunk"

I notice when I am backing up, whenever I step on the brake pedal it makes a clunking sound. It only happens when going in reverse. Is this normal? It happens everytime I tap the brake pedal in reverse. I'm about to do a brake job and wondered if there was something I should do to fix this while I'm at it or if it's normal...

Mine does the same thing once in a while, when backing out of the garage, slight clunk when easing on the brake. Also would be curious about the source. My car only has 7700 miles, so I think pads are fresh.

Maybe it only happens with CE's that live in CT...

If it's coming from the front brakes, it sounds as if your missing the pad retainer clips that mount on the brake pads and hold the caliper tight against the mounting bracket. The yellow circle is the clip.

Some pads don't come with them and people don't realize this and toss the clips along with the old pads. I personally run one clip on both the inner and outer pad.

I just checked and it looks as though I do have those clips in place. Any other suggestions?

The pins that hold the front calipers in place get beat up and the holes get silghtly enlarged. This slop creates a clunk in the front during braking in both directions usually but worth a look. Pull the pins and look at them they get like 2 grooves in them. I machined new ones about .010 " bigger solved my problem. Hope it helps.

check the spring clips again. this is very common and it is almost always the clips! maybe yours are bent in and are not working properly.

LoL someone in CT is stealing pad retainer clips from 96 CEs. Legend has it that there's a troll that goes around at night and somehow obtains and collects them. Suspects include homeless individuals and disgruntled GM/Chevy employees from back in 96 when they discontinued the c4. The perpetrator may fit both descriptions. :D
