You are looking right at it. Now would be the time to perform a test. If you don't test it now, the only way you will
know if it is faulty is when you are stranded. Your choice.

Taking water pumps off these cars are the easiest ones I've ever done. It took longer for the coolant to drain than removing the pump... If it ain't broke, don't touch it.

Yes, I know... I was a mechanic for many years and have been repairing and maintaining cars and trucks for over 40 years. I never get tired of working on cars. Especially being out of the business!!

just curious; the front of the engine looks pretty clean (at least compared to mine when I first tore into it); did you clean it? if so, how?

I'm not done cleaning it yet but I'm using rags soaked with a little gas and blowing it off with air to remove the loose dirt. It was a lot dirtier when I first removed the pump.

Please tell me you figured out where that oil build up around the water pump is from!! Mine looks the same and I'm about to change the water pump.

A simple cleaning of the radiator area has lead me down a rabbit hole...Im now replacing the radiator, water pump, all radiator hoses, replacing the valve cover gaskets, replacing the manifold gasket, new thermostat, replacing tensioner and idler wheel.

My thinking is I'm in there so lets get this stuff done. If I had the $ I'd put undersized pulleys...

I also ordered a time cover gasket set thinking the timing cover is leaking.

I'm leaving the opti-spark alone. With 30k miles, it might last quite awhile longer.

It was not oil... on mine... I cleaned it up and put it together, I found it was just normal road dirt and dust collecting all over my engine. In the years of owning it I had a hose leak, thermostat housing leak and replaced the thermostat a few times. Leaving it wet there was allowing the dirt to build up over the years. After seeing that I now make sure to dry the area and blow it with compressed air after all wet work... I thought it may have been coming from the manifold but so far aster 1000 miles it's all as clean as new.

That opti looks original. I would 100% have the optidoc rebuild it. Dan

OK Rick, but please, for your sake, do not throw away the old original when you install your new Chinese knock off opti. You will thank me. Dan
