New Owner of a C4 - Best Service Manual
Hi. New owner of a fixer upper 1992 Corvette and super glad I ran across this forum. Fortunately I'm mechanically inclined (have to be on a farm) plus I have a plethora of tools soon to include a 2 post lift (cannot wait).
Anyway, one of the things I need to do is to rebuild the LT1 engine and while I'm at it, going to replace the trans (manual) seals and such. To do this, looking at getting a great set of manuals to assist with making engine removal the easiest possible. I see Chilton, Haynes and a 2 volume Chevy Shop Service manuals. Which of these (or others) would provide the best details for remove/rebuild?
Secondly, for those that have removed the engine and transmission, do you pull from the top or drop thru the bottom (realizing that going thru the bottom would work best with a lift)?
I'm sure I'll have more questions as I progress. Thanks in advance.

GM red books.
Engine from the top, remove the trans first.

Welcome to the C4 community!
You only want the 2 volume Factory Service Manuals everything else is worthless . There is someone selling a set in the for sale section now.
You want to to take the engine out from the top. You can buy a mount called “the happy hooker” that will attach to the engine and a cherry picker does the rest. You can search the forum for it.
You can also drop the transmission alone from under the car.

Cost more, but, worth it.
I recently bought the set for my 86.

The Factory Service/Shop Manual (FSM) is the one to get. It's a two book set. The others are too generic, and try (but fail) to cover the C4 '84-'96 in one book, but there are too many changes from year to year for one book to be anything but confusing and missing critical information!
The engine comes out from the top, and you don't even need to remove the hood!

Agreed with all of the above. A digital version of the two-book FSM can be had from RockAuto for $20, and is what I'd recommend both for cost and portability purposes.

Thanks for the replies! OEM Service Manuals on CD I will go.
Will start working on this project once I get my other restoration project (IH 1466 tractor) completed. In the meantime, I'll be lurking around reading all the posts that come out.

While I agree the real FSM is certainly needed, it does help to have additional. I use the Haynes for my '87 sometimes for better pictures, confirm (or correct) torque specs. Sometimes extra details as well, such as if thread locker should be used, RTV on intake gaskets, etc.
