Default 9.5 wide wheels

How rare are the 16x 9.5 wheels?. I heard they just threw what ever wheel they had on hand when they built these cars, so curious as to possible value.

They aren't particularly rare. 16" wheels and tires have limited demand. With good tires maybe 2-300 for the set.

Don't know where you heard that, but it isn't true. When the C4 was being designed/engineers, the standard wheels for an 1983 were going to be 15" wide. That changed to a 16" wide wheel for 84 thru 88 (the 88 had a optional 17" wheel).

You can tell the year of a 16" wheel by the color of the center. Black, Argent Silver, and a lighter silver were used. The salad-shooter" design was the same for 84-87. The wheel in your pic looks like an '87 wheel.

Whether they were 8.5 or 9.5 depends on the suspension option used and year. Its not rare.

My '84 wheels have the black centers, like your wheels. The '84 Z51 performance suspension came with 16 x 8 1/2" front, and 16 x 9 1/2" rear rim widths. There were 25,995 '84's built with the Z51 suspension option, so not very rare. My '84 with the base suspension (non Z51) has 16 x 9 1/2" both front and rear. Obviously not original, but fits fine.

They definitely did not use "whatever size they had on hand" to build these cars!

My 86 came with 9.5" rims with the silver center on them when I bought the car. Not rare AFAIK.
