Just looked up Steel Rubber prices. A complete set of new weather stripping is $833.30 for a coupe. Ouch!

Yes, they are a bit pricey. I am hoping that translates to a better product. I hope....at first glance the weatherstrip looks nice.

I'd pay it for top quality fit and durability.

Well, I opened the Steele Rubber package tonight and inspected the weatherstrip. The corners are not at all what I expected for the money. In general the weatherstrip seems well made but the corner bonding not so much. Both corners had small separations were the glue or bonding agent had not been adequately applied. An earlier email from Steele Rubber had stated if there were any problems they'd take care of it. I've sent photos of the corners to them. Well see...
I really had wanted to replace the weatherstrip Saturday. It's supposed to be about 75~80 here Saturday.

I asked them to hand inspect the corners in another weatherstrip before shipping it to me. Find me one with no pin holes or separations. This happened with one of the Willcox door weatherstrips I had bought a couple years ago. They quickly took care of it.

If one took the time to watch how the hatch glass will tear at the gasket in the corners, you will understand why I have suggested the use of rubber treatment to lubricate this area. Keep this corner lubed during the first month after installation and you'll not tear another gasket..

I have always cleaned/treated the weatherstrips. But, never gave the corners extra attention. When the stripping tore loose I temporarily tacked the corners down with a bit of silicone, used a film of dielectric grease to let the window slide easily over the stripping. When the new weatherstrip is on I'll do the same. Something better to use on the corners than silicone or dielectric grease?

Thanks, sleepless Went....

I already received an email from Steele Rubber apologizing for the bad part. They are going to hand inspect the replacement weatherstrip and ship it out today. They are also sending a return shipping label for the bad weatherstrip. Good to have such a prompt reply.

Yeah...go to bed. I have a terrible time sleeping with my arthritis. Just one of those nights. I'll continue to grease the new seal with dielectric grease. Thanks

I used a thin bead of crazy glue gel on the seam in the corner, let it dry and then put a thin coat of dialectic grease on the corner rubber about 6 inches in each direction.

I have noticed my weather stripping is starting to tear in the corner as well. It is amazing how things change. I thought I had did my research when I found the rear weather strip from Wilcox. It seemed like every where I looked, C4 owners where ecstatic with Wilcox weather stripping. So I purchased and placed a new one on my 1992 Coupe. This weather stripping has been in place maybe 5 months. The car is a weekend warrior so it don't see everyday use. As you will see in the picture below, mine doesn't fit in the corner as well as it should. I was so proud of myself when I installed too!! D

I will try Steel Rubber as well. I'm glad I found this post.

There are some links to good weatherstrip installation videos in the "How To" sticky, in this forum. My biggest tip is to let the gasket sit in the sun for a half hour before installing. This makes it more flexible and will allow it to stretch a little, if needs be. Also, listen to the guys about super glue in the corners and dielectric grease. I did, and my Wilcox gasket is still holding up after 3 years.

See how it turns up in the corner? That is because the miter is cut wrong stressing the outer seam. When my hatch was closed there was no seal to be seen in the corner. See post two. Proper corner fit because miter is cut both directions.

Well, got the Steele Rubber weatherstrip installed Saturday. Easy job...my plastic trim pieces are getting brittle though. Had one tab snap off. Luckily the end of the part rests behind one of the halo trims so holds it in place. The weatherstrip looks nice but there is a wrinkle in one spot from being shipped. Hope it smooths out with time and heat from the sun. Sorry no photos yet. The weekend was a whirlwind and forgot.
