Sawzall works with a metal cutting blade and does the job in seconds! Rent one instead of buying it. I have used it for this exact job.
I unbolted the entire exhaust from my 91 L98 and proceeded to cut everything up with my Sawzall so I could take the precats and the main cat to the recyclers and sell them for cash. I then cut the rest of the system up so I could fit them in my trash bin. It was a breeze!

Sawzall = what my muffler shop guy uses. I have one and a metal blade - comes in very often for bolts or exhaust stuff (especially); excellent tool "just to have" around the house or shop!

A long time ago, I was working as a gas station mechanic, and had never even heard of a Sawzall. One of our regular customers was a general contractor who did a lot of home renovations, built additions, etc.

He brought one of his trucks in for exhaust work one day. I had it up on the lift, hammering away with an air chisel at what was left of the old exhaust system, when he came into the shop and tapped on my shoulder. I stopped to see what he wanted, and he said, "Let this truck back down, son." When I expressed puzzlement about that, he just told me again to lower the truck.

He wasn't the sort of guy you'd argue with, so I did as he instructed, and lowered the truck. As it approached floor-level, he signaled me to stop, and opened one of the tool box doors on the side of the truck's utility body. He reached inside, and pulled out a red, steel box, and set it on the ground. He then told me to put the truck back up in the air, which I did. As the truck was rising, he opened up the box, and I noted that it said "Milwaukee Sawzall" on the lid.

He lifted out this tool, chucked-up a metal-cutting blade into it, plugged it into a nearby extension cord, handed the tool to me, and said "Give this a try, son."

I had that exhaust system on the floor in no time, and was amazed at what a great tool it was.

There's still a 30+ year old Milwaukee Sawzall in one of my tool cabinets. I've overhauled it once, and will soon be doing it a second time. It is without a doubt one of the best, most useful and most versatile tools I've ever owned, and I'll never again be without one. It is a workhorse and I have used the hell out of it for an incredible array of chores. I've even taken down a couple of small-to-medium sized trees (it got the job done, 'though a chain saw is better suited for that chore).

I can't imagine any DIY'er not owning a Sawzall.

Live well,

SJW

If you don't invest in some basic tools, you're going to have a tough time

Basic tool, later on in time power tools.

I'm in total love with my 3/8" DeWalt driver.

Sawzall is more than a one trick pony. I have used one to cut off exhaust systems, rusted bolts, prune tree branches (with an skil ugly blade), cut pvc, copper and galvanized pipe, 2x lumber, rough cut a new doorway, etc.

It is a basic in any tool arsenal along with a good drill, circular saw, jigsaw, etc.

When I did the axle back exhaust on the Camaro, I bought a Sawzall just for that one use.

Picked one up at Lowe's for around $50.
Have never used it since, but at least I have one now.

Milwaukee Sawzall. Great for butchering deer, cutting fence, ripping up tile (with a chisel blade) Power paint scraper, etc. You'll find lots of jobs for it. REALLY useful with a long demolition blade.

I have used two types.

A sawzall works and is useful for a lot of other jobs too.

A pipe cutter with blade rollers on a chain that you tighten up and roll around the pipe. It leaves a very good finish cut.

Any equipment or tool rental place will have sawzalls to rent. Home Depot will have them for rent too. A rental at Home Depot may be only $15-$20 for a 1/2 day or a few bucks more for a full day. They should come with a variety of blades but you can get metal cutting blades at places like Lowe's, Home Depot, Ace and others.

Default Sawzall

I am a Carpenter, shade tree mechanic and a professional firefighter. I have about every power tool you can think of i.e. air and electric. Other than my cordless drill I use my sawzall the most of all them. It has so many uses we carry one on our engine and rescue truck. if you are any kind of a D.I.Y a sawzall is a must have tool "period" You all ready need one and just don't know it.

i just bought an infrared laser temp meter, i own a tanning salon and meter the beds etc... and wondered why i waited so long.... i point it at everything

i just don't like clutter and excessive possessions, very minimalist...

i guess it's time to say goodbye to the old hack saw

This cutter is nice to have & makes great cuts but at 35 bucks you are half way to a sawzall.

A Sawzall is one of those tools that until you use one, you have no idea of what it's capable of doing. I've had one for over 30 yrs and as has been said I don't use it a lot but when I do it's the tool of choice. With the correct blade, it can cut almost anything you would normally come up against. There are even some diamond covered abrasive blades for exotic cuts I've seen. Haven't had that need so never got one of those specialized blades but I have a lot of wood and metal cutting blades and cut up a lot of things in less time than otherwise possible.

If you don't have one, watch after Christmas as there should likely be some sales on them.
