I had problems with my 90 too and it was just the radiator cap! Don't buy a cheap one from the auto patrs stores, get one from the dealer!

I own a 1990 as well. Agree its alarming to see the needle almost pegged to the 260 mark.

One thing to note, yes they do run hot when there is no air to them. The C4 is a bottom air feeder and does rely on speed. If you are in traffic it will climb to the hot with a stock thermostat and fan setup. As long as it drops back when you are highway cruising then your good to go.

As others have said, prevention is better than cure and I would check the space between the radiator and aircon condenser as it collects road trash.

Personally, I do find they run too hot for my liking before the fans kick in. I have an adjustable thermo fan to kick them in earlier as I feel the extreme under hood heat cannot be good for gaskets and wiring on these old C4's. I also run a 91 factory spec 15psi (down from 17psi) to ease the pressure of the head gasket and cooling pipes.
