Case-in-point: A recent poll (and supporting comments) showed that roughly 1/3 of ZR-1 owners have never tickled the (7100 rpm) rev limiter. After reading that, it seemed to support the notion that a large number of Corvette owners have never explored the performance envelop of their C4s, let alone that of later cars. In particular, some comments were that they'd not been to or much over 6000 rpm.
Well, hell...that being the case, it is easy to see why someone would have a hard time rationalizing the double the expense for "only" 75 hp more, especially if he wasn't even going to use what a standard Corvette has to offer!
And the beat goes on...

Safety Car
I started to really get into cars in the late 80's and I followed all the brands that were offering 300+ hp sports cars. There was a lot of competition from the Japanese brands and don't forget about the Viper. I think they all cut into each others market share and just about everybody gave up on these toys for awhile except for GM and Porsche.
I had the chance to drive a chipped 300zx twinturbo the same year as I got to drive a new ZR-1 and I would have gladly taken the 300zx for $32,000 dollars let me tell you. Of course the test of time has not been kind to that one, but a very driveable car it was.

There is the school of thought that says only those who actually witnessed the Vega, Pinto, and K Car, truly understand the huge advance of the C4, and the pinnacle nature of the LT5.

I shelled out the 4-cylinder in my 73 Vega, and put a 350 hp SBC 327 in it's place. It was an "interesting" car! But, it was prone to rusting, and I got tired of it. But, it would surprise a lot of people, including a co-employee that has an L82 in her 78 Vette. Straight line stuff only tho.
I had a BBC 427 in an El Camino after that. Damn thing would pass anything but a gas station! It was wicked on a straight and coupled with the 307 rear gear, it would smoke L98s. It was a bitch to drive in the snow, how-some-ever!
I've fussed with lots of SBCs, over a 40+ year span, including pure alcohol track cars too.
But, the nastiest thing to come along since my BBC days is the LT5 in the ZR-1, especially with a little port work!! Talk about having your cake and eating it too!

Hmmmm.... That is a valid point too.

It was a lot more fun that any BBC I ever owned, including a 400 hp 69. The LT5 is much more fun to drive.

I hit that rev limiter just about every time I drove a certain "Z". I sure do miss that car. My 95 feels like a Cobalt compared to the 91 Turq Monster (530-ish hp) ZR-1.
