Default smog pump

replaced the smog pump on my 85 with another, and runs fine question is the alternator bracket doesnt fit it is about a 1/2 inch off, will it be okay to run with out the bracket, or should i modify a bracket, i checked everything and it seems ok

Unsure which bracket you mean. The aft one reduces vibration and all that goes along with it. Frankly, it may be okay w/o, but I figure the GM bean counters wouldn't allow ANY parts that weren't necessary, according to engineering.

Ensure you're putting it back on the right way, too.
1/2" is a lot on that short sucker!

The engine vibration will cause the bracket to crack. That's why there are so many braces on the accessories.

yeah its the top wishbonebracket connceting the alternator and the pump, i took everything apart even down to the support bracket and re-traced my steps maybe got back alittle room but not much, i am gonna try and improvise something, does anybody know if the have the support bracket that goes from the intake to the pump?

Did you compare the old and replacement pumps? That would include the pulley diameter.

I wonder if you got the wrong new part.

yeah got one from pat, it was to wide and snapped the mounting bracket, pat ( who has a heart of gold, sent me another pump with the mouting bracket off and 85 went right in, im gonna play around again and retrace my senior moments to triple check i did it right, if not ill just got to lowes or home depot get some actual metal and form a bracket...

Maybe you got an 86-91 bracket? I believe your 85 is different.

That is correct..'85 was a one year only piece

Thanks guys gonna loosen the the belt take the smog pulley off then put the brace on see if it works

Well loosened the belt ,pulled the pulley off the pump , attached the alternator brace to te pump, a little pull with a screw driver down on the alternator ...and presto the aarp member is back I business , man it's a bitch getting old...thanks again rverybody
