replaced the smog pump on my 85 with another, and runs fine question is the alternator bracket doesnt fit it is about a 1/2 inch off, will it be okay to run with out the bracket, or should i modify a bracket, i checked everything and it seems ok

Unsure which bracket you mean. The aft one reduces vibration and all that goes along with it. Frankly, it may be okay w/o, but I figure the GM bean counters wouldn't allow ANY parts that weren't necessary, according to engineering.
Ensure you're putting it back on the right way, too.
1/2" is a lot on that short sucker!

Did you compare the old and replacement pumps? That would include the pulley diameter.
I wonder if you got the wrong new part.
