A Sumitumo tires or not so much
Looking to replace my 17 inch tires at approx 150 per tire range
Those Sumitumo tires are very reasonably priced
the survey on Tire rack is questionable
anyone out ther run these tires .. let me know your thoughts
any input on the best bang for the buck is appreciated
dont take the 150 per tire to specific ... it's not the a specific number written in stone
I cannot afford the 300 plus deals though
Looking for 2 - 275-40-17's and 2 - 315-35-17's
Merry Xmas

Sumitumos are cheap tires.
Kumhos and BF Goodrich are a decent alternative.

I've been running the Sumitomo HTR Zll tires for about 5 years now and can't say anything bad about them..The ones on the rear have about 32,000 miles on them and still look good, I had to replace the fronts at about 28,000 due to a front end alignment problem...Yes, they are a cheaper tire , but the performance is about the same as some of the tires costing more money..At the price of the Sumitomo's you could replace them every other year, and still be cheaper then most of the tires that are run on these cars..I have tried alot of the lower to mid priced tires, and if you don't want to spend a ton of money , this is a good "bang for your buck" deal..You have to remember, these are Summer Performance tires , they shouldn't be run if the air tempertures are anywhere near freezing..Also like the Coach says above, the Kumhos and BF Goodrich are a decent tire, , I have been reading about the "Firestone Firehawk Wide Oval Indy 500" tires, they have good reviews and the price is just a little more then the Sumitomo's, I may give them a try next time...........WW

I stumbled across a deal on Sumitomo HTR Z tires a few years ago for $62 and bought a set. They have been OK. I have about 25k miles on them and they are still about half tread. Their performance is just OK, they are not as responsive as the BFG Comp TA's they replaced, but for a daily driver I am glad I bought them.
At the current Tire Rack prices I would probably not buy them again. I would get the Firestone or the BFG tires. I have had good luck with BFG and a friend has the Firestone's and loves them.

Nitto and Continental
If they have the sizes you want these two brands have the highest ratings and satisfaction. Great forum reviews. I have Nitto's and love them and they are in your price range as are Conti's.

I have the Sumitomo HTR Z ll on the front of my car. I would suggest to stay away from them. I got both of mine for $90 ($45 each) new because someone changed direction with a project and no longer needed them.

Posters should keep in mind and notice the OP specified 315's for the rear of his car. That size isn't available in some of the brands/models being commented about.

True. If matched tires are desired, I think Nitto, HTR-Z's, and F1 SuperCar are about the only choices available. There might have been one more but I can't remember.
That said, F1's are high. They would be ruled out due to the OP's criteria. So, it might be a choice between HTR-Z's and Nittos?
FWIW, I used to think Sumi's were crap. I started having them road forced balanced AND I finally rebuilt my suspension (even though I only have 75k on the car). It turned out age and suspension "slop" were part of the problem. For the price, I'm much happier with them now. (I'm talking for non-track use.)

I'm running them on my 85 and like them. The price was right there's not as much road noise as the 255/16 BF's I had on the car. Grip is good / better probably because of more foot print. I looked at the Goodyears, to much for around the same amount of mileage. I'm strictly a street car, daily driver so pushing on the car really doesn't happen. There a good tire, there reputation is much like the C4, a lot of bad opinions until you drive it, then it's hey pretty good.

I had them on a previous set of rims, they are fair. I would only buy again based on limited funding.
Kumhos I like, but they are good for a short time, after that they get slippery.

I bought a set of rims with sumo's on them....came well balanced and they seem like a pretty good tire....don't drive them on wet roads much...
these are 315's on a 17" rim....on a 85

I've had very good luck with both, but prefer the Kumhos. For years, the Sumitomos were the only alternative to the Goodyears for the rears of the ZR-1s, and many of them are still running them. I have a set on my wife's C5. Kumhos are slightly wider per size, or at least look to be. Sumitomos tend to have more rounded edges. There seems to be a lot of cheaper Chinese tires hitting the market now too.

I've put 10K miles on them in my ZR-1. They are fairly quiet, handle well, and perform well in the rain. Are they the best tires ever? No. Are they a good bang for the buck? Yes.

I think the Sumis are good bang for the buck too. I agree about them summer tires so if you do cold weather driving it may be a consideration. I live in FL so it doesnt really affect me. Never had any issues in the rain either and we get a lot of that. All in all I think they are a good sticky tire, great for a daily driver.
The PO put the first set on with the ZR1 rep rims. Ive put about 50 K miles on the 275/40/17 fronts and they are in dire need of replacement. The backs are 315/35/17s and I replaced them about 20K miles ago. I thought that PO had smoked some rubber off of them because of the faster wear but with that 20K the new rears are showing the same tendency and I am thinking they are only good for 30K. Maybe the recommended air pressure is too high for a fat tire.

I'm running Sumi's and have no complaints, Winter, Summer, wet and dry, it's all good..the car is driven every day and their wearing well, I would certainly consider getting some more when the time comes.
