Default Changing the Center console top cover

I need to change the center console top cover on my 96 collectors edition. I ordered a new one but believe I need to remove the gear shift ****. It is an LT1 automatic. Anyone have step by step instructions on how to do this?

Gently pry the plastic button upward and slide it off the shaft (fairly easy to remove).

There's a snap ring holding the **** on the shaft. Remove that and the **** slides straight up. Don't lose that snap ring

Edit: Assuming that you have an automatic, that is...

Are you referring to the shift plate section;
or,
the arm rest console cushion ???

The Shift plate section. It looks like there are only 2 screws holding it on plus the shift handle.

You can also unscrew the leather boot from the under side of the shift plate section. You will have to do it anyway if your planning on reusing the boot. There's four screws, two front and two rear. This way you don't have to fool with pulling the k no b off the shifter.

OK so getting the top console cover off was easy and your suggestion on the screws was great. Next problem, the old part had round metallic push nuts over the plastic tubes that the 4 screws that hold the shifter boot and the two that hold the gear shift indicator screw into. These appear to be one time use and the new part from Mid America did not come with them. Any suggestions? I was thinking a wood dowel but really do not want to use wood.

You could fill the tubes with silicone, let dry and screw into the dry silicone. Bust out the dremel and cut the nuts free of the old console
