Default Costco gasoline - of interest to Canadians

I've been wondering about using Costco gasoline in my C4 - since Costco premium is priced way below the name-brands - and found that in the US, Costco's "Kirkland Signature" gas is now qualified as a Top Tier gasoline.

Since I live in Canada, I wondered if the same was true in this country.

Here's the response I got from Costco:

"In order to qualify for TOP TIER an additive must contain about three times the EPA detergent requirement, and Costco's Kirkland Signature Gasoline additive dosage is about five times the requirement.

"Another TOP TIER requirement is that it be available in all a company's fuel nation-wide. Costco is almost complete with our program installation in Canada. We must wait to apply for TOP TIER in a country until all our locations contain the additional additive. We plan to meet the TOP TIER performance standard at all our gas stations in Canada by the end of the year.

"The TOP TIER program is administered by General Motors, and supported by several other automakers such as Toyota, Honda, BMW, Mercedes-Benz, VW, and Audi.

"Kirkland Signature Gasoline in the U.S. meets and exceeds the TOP TIER's performance standard and is available at all Costco U.S. gas stations (almost complete in Canada) in both regular unleaded and premium grades."

I asked specifically about the Costco near me (Hunt Club and Merivale in Nepean), and the Costco person said it now has the Top Tier gas.

Just FYI, this morning, Premium (91 octane) at my local Esso in Ottawa was 1.32 a litre. At Costco, 1.16. The name-brands seem to have a much higher markup for premium than Costco does.

I found out earlier this year that Costo gas is considered a "top tier" gas and I have no problem using it in my direct injection cars.

It's kind of funny that around here I can get Shell cheaper than Costco.

On a trip last year to Sun Peaks just out of Kamloops B.C., I discovered the Chevron 94 octane with no ethanol But at $1.50 per liter, I'm not sure the budget would handle a steady diet of it. But my supercharged '02 seemed to like it

Locally, Costco 92 octane is going for $2.96 per gallon which is a great price even considering the WA gas tax of 56 cents per gallon. But like most all stations, the pumps say "Includes up to 10% Ethanol". There is one station in town that has 92 octane with no ethanol, and it's running about $3.49 per gallon

While it is nice, I don't depend on cleaners in the fuel or in a can. I send the injectors off every 3 years for cleaning and testing.
