Corvettes at Carlisle Burnout Contest
What happens when you get a couple thousand LS and LT engines together for an annual meetup of America’s favorite sports car? SMOKE!
That’s what happens every year at the Corvettes at Carlisle annual festival of speed. This year was fairly epic, and can only be illustrated with a 20-minute clip of the best burnouts at the fest.
See the rest on the Corvette Forum homepage.

I personally can't understand doing this my tires are $400 each and to burn them up is just plain stupid. Plus the fact that your risking body damage from your tires flinging up pebbles or even chunks of rubber against the rear quarter panel.
I believe I would drive a rusty bladed knife through my chest before I would abuse my beautiful Z and do something as ridiculous as these burn outs.

^Maybe. I guess I'm one of those too.
I agree. It was more "impressive" thing to do back in the '70's and '80's (when I was a kid) because cars had no *****. 1/2 the cars couldn't do a burn out or brake stand, and those that could....well, you'd be doing good if you could get to the top of 1st gear. SO a GOOD burn out was "something".
Now days? Practically any car can annihilate it's tires doing a brake stand in just a few minutes. So what does this prove anymore? It may be a fun thing to do once in a while off the cuff, when no one is looking, and it's necessary for good drag strip passes, but to drive into a blocked off burn out box, w/a bunch of people watching....what's it prove anymore? Who "wins"? I know I wouldn't feel like a "winner" after shredding my 295 tires.

LOL...tire companies LOVE burnout contests!!! Also drifting for obvious reasons.
Was looking for a sign or poster somewhere in the picture to see if it was sponsored by a tire company...LOL
Seems like the older I get, the more aware I am of tire wear and potential breakage during something like that. Worst is when a tire blows and the carcass tears up the fender and fenderwell.
Still love it though...not that I do it much to my own cars anymore.
Great link! Thanks for posting that

I agree, people don't go out and buy new tires for this. They use the ones that they would throw away after replacing, or old track tires.
That said, I really wouldn't be worried about body damage as you can protect against it. I would be more concerned with overheating and destroying your engine. As the white corvette did. That said, I love to watch them!!!! I was there for this and it covered the grandstand!
If I had money to spare in case I did damage, I would participate. Its just like anything else we throw money at that we don't need; its FUN.

Didi you guys see (in the OP's video) what ^this guy^ did to his diff? He did a "One tire fryer" for a while. Probably almost a minute. In the pic above, you can actually see the smoke "shooting" from his left rear tire...not the right. I wonder how his posi clutches are now? I wonder how worth it that was?

When I was a kid back in the mid 60's I worked for old "wingfoot" (Goodyear) and I had to mount all kinds of tires, tube type and tubeless including truck and tractor. I could buy my tires at store cost. I had the first Polyglass tires that came out and the first F-60's. They had a promo on polyglass and as employees we could buy them for $15.00 each. I only once burned rubber with them and then quit as I was only making $400 a month gross so that set of 4 tires was still expensive for me at the time. Unless drag racing (track) I could never find a good reason to wear tires out prematurely. Today I still carry that same thought in my head. Why waste tires especially with the cost today. Guess I am a grinch!

Ask you why most of car here have different rear rims:
Cuz they fit rear rims with crap old tires and mount them for the contest, as for differential, brakes ,and pieces of hot rubber hitting the fenders... Well we live once in a life... Why drink, why smoke, why drugs, why sex( too much),why rock&roll...😄
