Default Hatch Stays Closed

When I press the hatch open button, I hear it unlatch but it doesn't automatically raise. I can hold the button and push it open, but it pulls closed. It's like the shocks on it magically reversed - they want to pull it closed instead of push it open. It was working just fine, but now it does this. I'm hoping there's a simple answer out there.

Sounds like both of the struts are shot. The glass hatch is pretty heavy and if the gas pressure in the struts is too low, it will seem like they are trying to close it.

I would suggest replacing the two struts.

The previous owner said he just had both of them replaced. How could two new struts simultaneously go out?

EDIT: Correction. I think he just had one replaced.

The glass may also be stuck to the gasket. Try and see if you can raise it by grabbing with your fingers and oulling up. Mine gets stuck sometimes and I sprinkle a bit of talcum/baby powder on the gaskets. If the glass comes right up with your fingers, the struts are bad as Cruiser suggests.

I can get it open, it just doesn't stay open.

After looking at it some more, I'm leaning toward one of the struts being bad... like you said. Thanks.

Chances are BOTH struts are gone.

That glass hatch is heavy!
Support it with something to hold the weight when replacing the struts!
Otherwise, plan on having a secondary problem like a wrenched back or something worse.
