1000 mile trip in a c4, my opinion!
Just got back from a road trip. Drove from Myrtle Beach SC to the mountains of Tennessee and back. 1995 convertible, here is my opinion. I bought the car last month, 46K miles, Lt-1, 6 speed, very clean. Changed the oil, flushed the coolant, 4 new tires and hit the road. The trip up there was pretty good. weather ranged from low 70's to mid 80's, no rain, top down the whole way. I got 25.7 mpg, running between 60 and 80mph the whole way, mostly interstate. Car handled well, fun through the mountans, played a little and ran with a BMW 335i pretty hard for about 40 miles through the twisty's and turns. Comming back, not so good! Rain most of the way. Top up and the car rattles and squeeks lime hell. Wind noise, feel most bumps and just not that fun. Wished I was in my truck. So, the c4 is fun to drive, top down, nice weather. Top up, bad weather, c4 not good! My past c5, and 2 c6's, were fun rain or shine. Sorry, but the c4 vette is a toy only, good weather, good roads, short trips.

Well let that be a lesson to all of us.

Maybe it is a difference between coupe and vert.
I have driven my coupes rain or shine on long trips and daily driven (25K per year) and I don't have the same impressions. I think they are fun all the time. Yes, different than later generations, but still fun.

Back in April I did 4600 miles in a 91, in 16 days and I loved it. Temp was such that I didn't need a/c but ran windows down most of the time.
The first day out I drove 850 miles from DFW to northern Az. Didn't realize how far I had gone till I got out to eat. After dinner I decided that I had gone far enough. Went all the way to San Francisco and got to drive down 'twisty' street (Lombard) and believe me you don't really push very hard or you will end up in someone's front yard.
Can't speak to the C4 vert since both of mine are coupes. I do know that a 63 vert isn't great with the top up. Drove one for 3 years and the only time the top went up was for rain. Mid 20s just turn the heat all the way up and roll up the windows, good to go.

You review reads similar to the C7 owners who used to own C6s Vettes.
You used to own a C5 and two C6s; Why are you now a C4 owner?
I own a C5Z06, and consider the C4 to be more fun. It makes me feel part of the car.

Recently drove my 90 coupe from Chicago area to North Carolina and then spent 3 days chasing around in the mountains of NC, GA, and TN, doing the Tail of the Dragon, Six gaps, Devil's Triangle, Blue Ridge Parkway - all very spirited - ending in Bowling Green, KY; some 2500 miles. Never a squeak heard, except for those uttered by my wife as we chased through the twisties! And, the same goes for my previous 95 LT1 coupe - on some of those same roads and some of the Rockies in Colorado too. No squeaks.
So...Isolated case, or one of the common "benefits" of C4 verts?

May be a convertible quirk?
I just drove my '96 CE coupe round trip from Florida to Kansas City for the NCRS National Convention (occasionally in heavy rain) and the car performed great and was comfortable through out the 3k mile trip.
The only problem I had was the video speeding ticket that I received from Tennessee, in the mail, when I arrived home.

During winter we went for a holiday on the sports tourer... even with all my leathers on and covered from head to toe it was as wet and cold as you could get... she nearly froze to death on the back... the C4 in any conditions is paradise to her... sometimes I have a bit of fun with her on really cold and wet days and say its time to get the bike out ... lol ... she pleads for the C4... lol... she loves the machine as much as I do.

I'm going to speak C4 blasphemy here... but its true.
Non-run flat tires and a set of KYB shocks make the car so much better of a ride. In all my yrs of being a car guy I've never seen such a transformation (softening) of a ride as I did when I switched to Conti DW's and KYB shocks. For a street driven C4 I'd recommend changing both.

Seriously? I am thinking if trading my 89 for a C5z for the performance. TPI is just not enough power. Should I reconsider?

I traveled with the caravan to the 50th Anniversary celebration back in '03 driving my '92 'vert. The trip from Washington to Bowling Green and back was 6600 miles. Did the round trip in 11 driving days. I probably put another 500 miles on the car touring the area. Never had a problem and it was a very comfortable ride except for some really busted up parts of I-40 we encountered in parts of Texas and Oklahoma.
If you encountered leaks on the trip, you should be seeing them at almost any time it rains even with city driving. New weatherstripping, maybe adjust the door windows and the top and the leaks will go away. For squeaks, try using a very light coating of dielectric grease on the weatherstripping.
As far as shocks, any high quality new shock will improve the ride over old shocks. KYB's are good shocks as are Bilstein's and there are others too that will improve ride comfort or improve handling.

I also have a 90 coupe. Did 2500 miles from Wisconsin to N.C. this spring in 8 days. 5 days in rain, not one drop of water leaked in, no rattles. It was a blast zipping along through the mountain roads. Wife loved the car and the trip. Sport bucket seats were extremely comfortable, no burning butt after a 480 mile day!!!We are looking forward to a trip to MO. this fall. I believe the C4 is a great cross country vehicle. Biggest surprise was how much room we had for all of the wife's luggage.

I agree that driving with the top off is pretty awesome. But driving in the rain with the top on, I hear the same squeaks and rattles. But it is an expectation that I have with owning a 30 year old sports car. I still plan to "fix" a few of the rattles, but I think C4 drivers feel more connected to the road, and get more feedback out of their car than C5-C7 drivers get. It is just a "different" experience, more of a a "raw" experience. It isn't for everyone, but I enjoy it.

I have a 2002 Z06, a 1992 automatic coupe and a 1991 supercharged coupe, 6 speed. All 3 cars feel totally different from each other when driving them. Take a Z06 out for a long test drive and see how you like it. It is a great car.
However, I sold my first 1991 so I could buy the Z06. Since then I bought 2 C4s to go along with the Z06. There is something special about driving a C4.
