Can't help you on the HID's, but can tell you that putting 100/80W H4 bulbs (in Hella housings) made one heck of difference in my C4. The price is reasonable and they are a direct replacement; installation is like replacing with stock units.
If your heart is set on HID's, that's okay, but you can have 95% of the performance for a lot less money and reliability is second to none on the H4's.

Silverstar sealed beams are cheap and significantly better than stock. (heavier though)

That is what I am using in my '96, and am completely happy with them.
To be fair though, I don't do a lot of night driving.
They are a huge improvement over the factory headlights, but they are not of the same level as the head lights on modern cars of today.

I went from standard headlamps to Sylvania silverstars. Still not satisfied, I went to Hella euro housings using bright H4 bulbs. Still not satisfied, I went to plug and play HIDs with projector housings. I bought them from www.corvettehid.com and I am very happy with them.
I have recently heard about a LED headlight maybe that something you can look into as well

The LED headlights are super expensive:

Note that's $523.99 for ONE headlight.

I tried the SilverStars and was not impressed.
Justpost, here is what I have:

...they accept any H4 bulb, and are a direct replacement.

I used the hella lens and 6000K HID's. The ballast fits fine in the bucket with the headlight. There is no comparison with HID's to stock headlights. I never use my driving lights. I actually have black out covers on them.
good luck

Corvette Mods has HID headlight conversion kits:

I recommend the 55W option and the projector lenses.

If you go HID, get the right color, around 6000K and use the projector lenses that have a cut-off to focus the light. In stock type housings the focal point is wrong and the light "scatters" and blinds other drivers.
There is not any aftermarket HID conversions that are DOT legal. None!
If the car was not factory equipped with HID, you can't legally install them for on road use.
Law Enforcement is really cracking down on especially botched conversions with the wrong lenses, {prism vs projector} and wrong color, like 15000K blue/purple bulbs.
You can end up being ticketed and have to go back with stock DOT approved lamps. Then you have an expensive pile of junk left over!
Be sure and order a spare bulb from the vendor you use. None of the parts houses stock them.

Check the voltage at your lamps and I'm quite sure maybe just an improvement in the supplied voltage might make you happy. If you wanted to see the improvement build one headlamp socket with a three to four foot harness and one night power the headlamp using alternator supplied voltage at maybe 2K RPM.
Check the voltage at your headlamp with both car running (2K maybe) and also not running and compare.

Got H4 Hella replacements and have choice of bulbs. Had them about ten years without any issues......no change in fuse needed.
Good Luck!

I've bought a lot from corvette mods but those headlights are very poor lighting quality.
Looked at the projectors that remove the entire headlight mechanism and are body mount. Only slightly better. Not worth $$$
The best way to go is buy clear lense headlights and purchase DSR2 or Minimoto high quality projectors and custom mount them in the backing of the clear lense lights. You can get real high quality 50W HID lighting <$200. Better than a C6 or C7

Those projectors from cmods can be bought for 20 bucks on ebay. Not trying to put them down or anyting. I've bought a few things from them myself.
