Oil filters

Melting Slicks
My first choice for an oil filter on the Corvette is always the Mobil 1 filter. This is not only because it's one of the best oil filters available, but also I only drive that car about 5000 miles per year which means it only gets changed once per year. So I use the good stuff. Second choice would be Wix, with Purolator Pure One a close third, then NAPA gold if I really had to. But not a Fram.
The pickup truck sees more miles so it gets changed more often. In this case I'm comfortable using a standard quality filter such as AC Delco or Purolator classic. But not a Fram.

I agree totally active1951, I always check under the vehicle after changing a filter. After the oil is refilled and new filter is on, I start the engine, wait for oil pressure to top out and then look under the car for an oil filter leak. In the bad old days sometimes the 'O' ring gasket would get cut by the can and leak. With the acceptance of spin on filters the double gasket problem can happen more often than you would ever think. Always look under the vehicle for a leaking filter!

oil filters i use
I use Purlator PureOne on my Silverado, have for almost 15 years. On my boat which has a MerCuriser (chevy 454) I use NAPA Gold, and on my Vette I use Mobil 1 filter. I have never had a problem with any of them.
This is a great example of spending just a few dollars more, and saving thousands in dammage. Dont be cheap on oil filters, it is just not worth it.

From what I have read, Fram has been bought out a few times in the last 30 years or so... The original owners sold out to a Honeywell group in 1967, then a few years ago a company called "The Rank Group" in New Zealand bought the Fram company and it's been down hill for Fram since then...I can remember when I was a kid, alot of people used Fram filters without problems, but I guess producing a cheap *** product using a well known company name is what a lot of foreign companys do now.....This is happening with alot of well known American products...Welcome to the new world......WW

I am surprised there is not more love for OE AC Delco filters. I have used them exclusively on all of my GM cars for over 20 years. Then again the only hung over person changing the oil is me.

This is what I think is the definitive site on oil filters:
http://www.minimopar.net/oilfilters/
Here's where he tears them apart and compares all the various manufacturers and tells you who makes what:

all mfgrs use different specs for their racing products.
They can't afford to have an orange missile come shooting out from under car on the track..

How the hell is FRAM still in business with their crap? Ten years ago I knew they were garbage, and then heard it all over the vette forum. I've avoided them like the plague since and never had a problem. I even told my mechanic about them and he said he wouldn't touch Fram filters with a ten foot pole, unless it was a pole he was willing to get saturated mysteriously in oil. Every mechanic I've ever known and talked to all knew to steer clear of FRAM. How the hell is there still a market for this crap? lol What idiots are actually buying and using them, because someone has to be...

Has anyone ever had a oil filter fail/blow out? My 93 is stock and i just had a fram leak BAD. I got it off and its sitting in pan with 5 qts of mobile 1. Anyone have a favorite? This is a first for me. Im lucky it happened in my driveway i noticed it as i was backing out of carport.
And yes, I have. A little over ten years ago mine "mysteriously" blew our and leaked oil everywhere....it was a FRAM. Mystery solved.
I do have a couple favorites, though I'm sure sticking a a coke can under your friggin vette beats a FRAM. Ever since my corvette took a little orange crap in my driveway with oil everywhere, I've been using either Mobil 1 or Purolator. Mobil 1's probably a little better, but the purolators are cheaper from what I can tell and I've had no problems with either. I did have one issue with one of the purolators a few years ago, but it wasn't their fault. One of the oil change idiots apparently didn't screw it in/install it correctly one time, and another time I had went over something in the road at high speed that was apparently protruding from the ground high enough to slash my oil filter in two like a sardine can and have my vette dump oil everywhere. Since then I put a metal plate over the area. Right now I have a purolator in there.

I must say I only put Wix on my vette. But I always notice when watching one of the tv series Chasing Classic cars etc. when they open the hood the Ferraris almost always have the dual Fram filters right up front. If they are so bad why would they use a Fram filter on such an expensive high performance vehicle?
