Hi
sorry you had the valve cover problem, see below there are some on ebay. Pricy though

http://www.ebay.com/itm/1985-1986-Corvette-C4-Valve-Covers-GM-/370912242417?pt=Motors_Car_Truck_Parts_Accessories&hash=item565c17aaf1

Look around you should be able to get them cheaper, or go for some plain chrome ones.

Best bet is to locate a replacement cover in the parts yard or one of vendors here.
Shouldn't cost too much.

C4 ownership is about work and play.
Sometimes much more work than play

Another solution would be to take two (2) sets of gaskets and silicone two together to double the height of the gasket. You might have to get longer bolts.

Help an automotive engine noob here - over torquing a valve cover bolt and you'll break it? Seems like he was being careful in the first place so how did this happen?

He actually broke the valve cover. They are magnesium. Check the boneyards sir. These cars are in them.

Felpro and Mr. Gasket make gaskets 1/4 inch thick, and you will need longer bolts or studs.

Yeah, I'm suspecting something else here too. If the cover just snapped, first of all, it seems like it would take something else than just overtightening a bolt to break it, especially if he was being careful. But then he also said he doesn't think these aftermarket covers are clearing something, like he can hear the rockers against them? Sounds suspect.

Anyway, I second the boneyard deal for the right fit. You only need one right? You can still paint to match the other.

You did not say what the broken valve covers are, but I had this happen to one of my OEM cast aluminum ones on my 69. Relacement cost was expensive so I took it over to a shop that specializes in welding aluminum (boat props). Low and behold a little while and $40 later and it was almost good as new:-) That was several months ago now and it has been great ever sense.

If you look close you can see the welds but it is not bad at all.
