C4 Popularity among enthusiast
#43
The C4 is the bargain of the century. Some don't like the styling but I do they are similar in shape to the Ferrari 308 and the delorean. 2 other cars I like. Most people ask me "I hear you have an old corvette, what year?" Then I say mid eighties. They always say oh. I think they were hoping I would say a 67 or something.
My personal favorite vettes are:
58
72 454
84-90
Other then those years I would switch over to dodge and get a classic 2002 viper gts acr fe.

At shows my vette gets the most attention when its running because of the big cam and loud exhaust, because most people are lemmings. I do get people that are real enthusiasts that ask about the engine, what year it is, how much power it makes etc but I would say 80% of the people at the shows I go to go there to look at the shiny things that cost a lot of money and my car just confuses them.

I have a 5.0L mustang as well as a C4 and my DD is a modern fwd 4dr that most "kids" would think is cool.
IMO the stang and C4 both suffer and benefit from the same things.
30yrs and younger don't like them because they are "old" and their dream car (Civic Si, WRX, ect..) will outperform them in every aspect except drag racing. (I own one and its pretty much true). They don't know how to fab a bracket, make exhaust pipes stop rattling, or do body work... but they know how to tweak the MAF transfer curve w/tuning software, install LED lights, and buy parts to make it look "better".
Gen X'ers and older are far more interested in 20yr old cars because of a blend of nostalgia / cost / availability / and mechanical ability.
One other thing is depreciation. C4s, Z28, T/A, GN's, 5.0L stangs have reached what I call the seperation point for values. Some have bottomed and are **slowly** starting to go up. The others (DD) are subject to mileage and condition.

Someone said this a while ago and I found it very interesting. The C4 is in the middle between used car and classic car. As time goes on, it should get more desirable.
I wonder if the other Corvettes got the same reputation as the C4 at one point. Plus, the C5s are dropping, so now it's their turn!

Funny the timing of this thread.
Last night, while working in my garage w/the doot open, a guy pulled up, rolls down his window, and hollers to me; "Nice Vette!"
Some people (who don't own them) like 'em.

Why would you want that stock trailer queen. I would prefer a used C4 that someone has gone over and added better exhaust and some performance to it. Something to have fun driving and to enjoy on the open road. It's a car not a painting. Drive it.

I will say this, driving a 2014 Camaro SS, and then getting into my L98 89.. it's amazing just how much better the Corvette talks to you through the steering wheel than the Gen 5 Camaro.
Camaro you'd never know is a 3800lb car in how it handles and brakes, but that weight definitely robs some of the old gut check factor of the LS3 under the hood. And the steering feel is almost non communicative.
I'd say there's ALOT of merit in the C4, namely in it's communication and imo, timeless styling.
There's also as far as autocross, mountain, and street driving goes something to be said about the LTRs hitting when they do in lower RPMs. I can't wait to get the 6.6 (400) swap together.

I guess the C4 is perfect for me, I'm in the camp of if I can't drive it, I don't want it. Anything I've owned gets driven and driven alot, why? Because that's what I bought it for to enjoy DRIVING it, I don't have the restraint to have such a capable car sitting in the garage and only seeing 500 miles a year. My dedicated drag car sees more street miles than that yearly lol.

I drive about 2000 a year in the Corvette. Fact is, I enjoy driving the car but I also really enjoy it the way that one enjoys a nice piece of art or jewelry. I love driving and I love owning it. And I like keeping it really clean and pretty much show worthy at all times. The car is truly the best of all worlds for me. Affordable, fast enough, fun to drive, and some wow factor from the cognoscenti.

Sounds like this guy doesn't know his head from his a$$ when it comes to cars so he couldn't possibly know what your talking about.

I've never felt any rejection of my '84 at any show or cruise I've entered, and I frequently get positive comments when I stop for fuel. Maybe it's my own positive attitude that rejects any negative innuendos. All I know is that I've had too much with my 'vette for the last 10 years!
