I Bought a Ruby Red 93 40th 6sp car for $2k
The car hasn't run in a year, it needs paint, and some interior. Car has 160,000 miles, with a rebuild of the engine 20,000 miles ago. The guy had some problems starting it when hot, changed the opti, now it doesn't run.
Can title, because I bought it!

It's a gamble. It could wind up costing you more to get this thing running than it would to just pony up the money up front for a nicer car. Or it is entirely possible that the reason it doesn't run is a burned out ICM, a $50 +/- part and 10 minute install. (When LT1's don't start or run when hot, 90% chance it's the ICM)

If you don't want it, I will go get it. Would love to have the drive train for a future street rod project.

I figure, I can get it running without a lot of money. Can drive it with the ugly paint, might try to paint it myself, I've got the HVLP, and compressor, just never tried to paint a car.

This sounds great in theory, but alot of times this isn't how it works..... Most times, a car that has been neglected is a "MONEY PIT" that never ends..Like mentioned above your usually better off spending more money and getting a car that's been taken care of...This is basically a "Parts car", and thinking it is anything other then that, in my opinion, could be a very expensive mistake..A car with 160,000 miles on it is going to need a major overhaul, trust me on this because that's exactly the mileage I have on my 89........WW

Go for it you don't want to be that guy saying I could have bought a 93 40th anniversary for $2000 back in 2014. I would buy it and park in garage and tinker with it. When you have some extra cash slap a brand new paint job on it and it will be like new. The cost of paint varies. With a future collector like a 93 ruby I would pay a little extra for paint. Don't MAACO it.

Check the codes, it can give you a good idea as to why it may not be running. The ICM has dielectric grease under it to insulate it and if that dries out/washed out over tim can cause the ICM to burn out or run until it gets hot and shut engine down. I would check ground connections of the wiring. But again check codes. How are the wheels, interior? I'd go for it as I have a "ruby", it could be a diamond or should I say a ruby in the rough!

Not everyone is looking for an investment/collector grade car. This one is far enough gone that it isn't a sin to do whatever a guy wants with it. I say go for it with parting it out as an option if it gets too ugly once you dig into it. It's always cheaper to buy than to build (unless you do it on the cheap, but most aren't happy with that) so if your dream is an investment / collector car save up your money and forget this one. If you're looking to have some Corvette fun on the cheap this might be worth playing with.

Didn't you read his whole post??? It not only needs paint , the thing doesn't run, the interior needs to be redone, and it's got 160,000 miles on it... In what world is a 93 ruby with that many miles, and non original paint, ever going to be worth anything , especially as a collector.....With that many miles, it's just an old car that needs a lot of work.....WW

seems like there is two trains of thought, vette lovers. One is to buy a car and act like its a princess and has to have all number matching parts and nevera greasy finger for them. If it aint clean and shiney, almost perfect, its not worth having. Then there are those who like to build their cars, care less about numbers and more about performance, who wouldrather have a nice shiney car but its ok to wait till next year to paint it..and just enjoy a corvette they built themselves. There is nothing wrong with either train of thought and more than enough room in the hobby for both.EVERYONE does love a really nice vette but for some, money isn't the point of owning one.

Spend $8,000 today for a well maintained low mileage ruby.
You'll end up paying less now than putting more than that out of pocket in that $2,000 pit.
