Default Help with paint.. Can I do a repair myself?

I have some cracks that look like thin webs from a small impact to the rear bumper. the rest of the car is fine. any chance I can paint myself? also is there a clear coat on the factory paint?

any help in this area would be great..

thanks!

I would suggest you do all the prep work. Unless you are confident in your ability to color match the paint, I would let a pro shoot it.

My Arctic White '95 had spider webs front and rear. Sanded it, primed and then super fine sanding followed with Duplicolor Classic White then Duplicolor clear coat. It still looked great 2 years later when it was sold. I wouldn't chance it with a metallic but black should be no problem.

Duplicolor Classic White then Duplicolor clear coat
Can you tell me more about this product. Also how small an area can I work. I am good with finish and detail but have not painted a car in 16 yrs and wonder about the new paint products and how to work with them. I do have a compressor and will pick up a gun. I would apply several coats and color sand for high shine. I still wonder about clear coat. I think this car has one so how does this effect me.

thanks in advance for the pointers. Also any websites you can point me at might help. ;) ( I really want to try doing this myself) :smash:

Yes, the car is clear coated..and unless you are setup to do paint work I wouldn't do it yourself. I too can remember the old laquer days when you could paint em' and sand em and buff em with no problem..but today's urethanes are very different. And the cost to do it almost doesnt warrant doing it yourself. As for the can method..White might be ok but I wouldn't risk it on black, toooo inconsistent. Sorry to burst your bubble but as always..it's just my .02..take it for what it's worth.. one thing forsure..it IS clearcoated... :)

I'm a good painter, but I don't feel that I could paint fiberglass with a gelcoat, and properly color match it. I would have a pro do it if I were you. That's not to say you CAN'T, or SHOULDN'T, just what I would do.

BTW, Steve, you need to resize your sig pic. to a maximum of 500 pixels wide. You're at 800 pixels in width.

Steve...the Duplicolor is the small, cheap spray cans you can get at Walmart or about any auto store. If you mask off the bumper, don't put on too much base coat (it will look dull) and finish it with the clear coat and If your careful, there is no reason it should not look good but if you screw up royally....so what, it's a small area and a pro won't have any extra work to fix it.

leave that to the body shop. you will probably do more harm than good. rubber bumpers need a flex agent in the paint. this is not a good way to save money. to do this right, all tha old cracked paint will need to be removed and re painted.

There is some great info in the Tech Tips Section of the Forum. Here is the one for the rear bumper fix.....

WOW, Had no idea it was so tough. Has anyone out there had a success in this area? Any idea what the cost will be for this type of a repair.

remove the bumper, strip, prep and paint; probably $300 to $500
