My 85 does the same thing, I think it's the alarm system arming. It's done it ever since I have owned the car, 2 years now.

Did you open the door with the key still in the ignition?

I would take the dash apart and see exactly where the sound is coming from.

The alarm system is armed by locking the doors.

my '85 doesn't make any noises, I know the alarm works because I have set it off a few times by mistake.

do you have an aftermarket stereo installed, I have one in another car that beeps at me every time I shut the car off, just a thought.

It could very well be the aftermarket stereo. The car itself has nothing that would "beep" behind the dash.. The car does have a "chime noise" for the headlights being left on or the keys left in the ignition.

I got the impression that he was afraid to touch his car because he might break something or not be able to get it back together. Some people are just not mechanically inclined. They end up spending a lot of money paying somebody else to work on their cars.

A little story... I had a '71 Corvette and the tach stopped working. It is driven by a cable that comes off the distributor. I had always been afraid to take the distributor apart because I didn't know how it worked or what the parts inside looked like. I thought they might have to go back together some special way or it wouldn't work. I took it apart and found that it was in fact extremely simple. Then it occurred to me that it has to be simple so Bubbas everywhere can work on it.
