1992 Automatic trans fluid
My apologies, I am sure as basic as this question it's been asked and discussed before. I am in the process of dropping the transmission pan and do a filter and fluid change to start a base line, I am getting mixed info on what type of fluid I should use. can someone help me put this to rest and help me with the type of fluid I should use. thank you.

I have seen reports that synthetic ATF will approximately double the life of the trans.
At more than $10 per quart, it may not be worth it to you (it wasn't to me, but I generally drive very short distances).
Get Dexron. It's the "official" GM approved ATF.

I have used Mobil 1 full synthetic trans fluid since 50,000 miles and my 91 now has 140,000!...
My 91 is driven daily and I've changed the trans fluid three times. (7 quarts each time)
I remove the top trans cooler line from the radiator, attach a tube and start the engine. The fluid pumps out into a container which also, reduces the amount in the trans pan making for a cleaner pan removal when replacing the trans filter.
Then, just replace with the same amount of trans fluid pumped out.

Thank you everyone, I guess I am still thinking old school when it comes to this type of maintenance. I had several telling it take ATF, then other tells me it Dextron III. I am use to hearing Dextron III, IV or even V, not ATP. Got it changed, now I need to do the differential

An AmsOil rep told me the other day that GM says that the new Dexron 6 will retro fill all the older trans as long as they are in fairly good shape.

The first time I changed my transmission fluid I bought a TCI transmission pan with drain plug. its the best investment you can make. makes changing the transmission fluid and filter a breeze..I just use the fluid that GM specifies.

Thank you everyone for the inputs, I went with the ATF with specs covering the old Dextron III. As far, as the pan with drain plug. It leaves more fluid than I like. I fabricated a vacuum driver sucker I insert in the dipstick tube, I can get majority of the fluid but 2 ounces before I drop the pan.
