You're saying it rotates in the cylinder but won't crank? You've confirmed with a DMM that the resistance is correct or you're assuming you were sent the correct one?

Your original works?

Well then there's an issue with the new key. Is it a GM blank or just a "generic"? I'd say if the resistance value is the same or within the min/max range then you've got a key that the resistance insert is below minimum thickness to contact the internals of the cylinder.

Check the lengths of the old and new. The newer keys are about 1/8" longer than the old ones and it might no be going into the lock cylinder far enough to make a good connection to the resistor pellet.

The newer key will fit both early and late ignitions and the OP's car is an '89 so there should be no issue. You do NOT buy generic blanks and expect success, GM, Briggs Stratton, Strattec that bear the GM in the molded key pad only. Very rarely will you have problems with those, very rarely!

Yes I indeed did buy an aftermarket key ,unknowingly though as the add said GM but when I got it no such luck, trying again with a new seller.

I would never buy something like that on-line. They are not that expensive. A local Chevy dealer or a key shop should be able to fix you up at less than $30. That way you can verify that it works before you leave.
