Default early C4 rims

I have always wondered what was going through the designers heads when those rims were being developed did they just sit back an say well we have designed a pretty cool car so the rims who cares. no offense to those that have them but man they look like hub caps from a 4 door ford. At least you can change them if you like.

Easy to second guess design styles of the past when you are so used to seeing what is available today.

But put yourself back in time, and only look at what was available then.
The whole C4 design (including wheels, and especially the Atari dash) were considered very futuristic at the time.

If someone would have have sketched a wheel looking like one of the current C6/C7 20" wheels, they probably would have been laughed out of the design studio.

My current 17" rims in my avatar on the left. I now have 4 original 1984 rims with relatively new Falcons on them (purchased in the spring; driven about 300 miles total.) Thinking about selling them, but shipping will probably be outrageous unless you live near Orlando, Fl.

I believe the manufacturing processes of the early, mid and late 80's had a good bit to do with what was offered. Pressure cast wasn't around then and conventional casting methods of the time demanded substantial mass to probably be considered safe and reliable.

It looks like maybe this was a very effective "selling" thread also. That would be good for "both of the involved"! Good luck guys!

I love it when guys pick apart 30 year designs. why not go back another 30, and say, "in-line six, 2-speed powerglide - idiots - what were they thinking?"

If you're talking about 84-87 then I can remember they looked awesome back in the day. But after a bit I changed mine to BBS styled. For 88-90 those are keepers!

Mike, I might also be interested in the wheels depending on their condition, width, and price...I need all 4 9.5 wide since I have the Z51 option.

Sorry, these are standard, non Z51, rims with 8.5" wide tires (255/50ZR-16's)

Let's keep the potential sale correspondence to a PM so we don't interfere with the intent of this thread.

Thanks.

I agree that they have not aged that gracefully, but I think they were very cool back in the day.

I still think the 84-85 wheels are awesome looking wheels with the blacked out center. The 86 were not painted, and 87 were gray. I have no love at all for the 88 base wheel.

Now, the IMO the ugliest Vette wheel is the 1997-199 wagon wheel. That is just heinous.

I rather have this type of wheel. I wonder if any company ever made them in 17".

I remember in the early 2000s you could buy 18" 5-spoke wheels.

If you had been alive during the eighties, you'd have noticed that these wheels were very similar to the Indy car wheels of those days.
Other mfgr's copy-catted the design as as well. (Nissan I believe) Smooth on the sides for airstream and speed. Vented for brake cooling.

A very active and purposeful design at the time. Yep, ugly by today's standards.

The not often seen 15" C4 vette wheel is my favorite:

I have no issue with them. They will stay as I am keeping the car stock. I do like the '89 and up salad shooter a little better.

In my ever so humble opinion...I hate the look of after market rims on a c4.... I love the original...taking mine in next week to get them powder coated, white face with Blk painted blades(I guess you'd call them)... But they look great with the factory's.......
