Default Bad Fuel Sending Unit?

I think I have a problem with my fuel sending unit. I was driving around with about 1/4 tank of fuel last week when the bars/fuel level dropped down to nothing and the reserve light came on. I only had 170 miles on that particular tank of fuel at the time. I went to the nearest gas station and filled up/topped off the tank. The bars still remained all the way down and reserve light stayed on. I went down the road to another station and topped off again (took less than 2 gal.). The bars showed full after cranking up again.

I drove the car for about a week with the fuel gauge working properly. After filling up again, the fuel bars went to the top and all appeared well. I put about 275 miles on a tank this past weekend and the bars never showed that any fuel had been burned. Car shows full and range shows to be around 450 miles.

Any ideas?

Welcome to life with a C4
It only took my wife running out of gas once on the highway once for me to do the repair in the above link. It did help a bit but I still don't trust the gauge. Reset your trip odo everytime you fill up to be safe.

One more thing, it is not the sending unit. I changed mine out before I did the cleaning repair and it didn't make a difference. once you clean it you will see a difference.

Here's little tip, if you decide to replace, make sure the one you buy isn't rusty, when I changed mine out, each time they gave me one rusted worst then one I was replacing. Next order new gasket, they do not come with one, you need to order separately.
Good luck.

I just did mine last month. Took less than an hour to disassemble, clean the contacts and put it back in. Before putting it back, check the sender with an ohm meter at the plug.

I took it to a guy that does work on the car for me yesterday afternoon. He just called and said it's working after cleaning the contacts.
