Default 94 tilt to loose

my 94 wont pass PA inspection stating that the tilt column is to loose. the mechanic told me to take the column apart to the turn single switch and then tighten down the bolts behind it for the tilt knuckle. I did that and when the column is in the full tilt it has play in the column but when down to the column is straight it is tight as it can be.

what am I looking at? do you think my column is shot. can it be rebuilt or must I find a good used one.

and how much fun is it to replace the column

Your state is broken and you need a new one.

And don't look north, this one is no better!

that is strange usaly the bolts are loose and once tighen problem is fixed. Are you sure you got to the correct bolts? It has been awhile but even once you are down past the TS switch they are a bear to see and get to and usaly you can only get to 3 of them. Dont hold me to this it has been awhile and I have done all different ones and they run together

You probably do not need to replace the entire steering column.

Your problem is in one of two places -
1. The bolts holding the bottom half of the tilt mechanism knuckle are loose and need to be tightened. You say you already tried that so I would go to solution no. 2.

2. The holes for the pins (there are two - one on each side) have enlarged and the front half of the tilt mechanism moves down and toward the drivers door. This is more likely the problem. You can replace the tilt steering knuckle (IIRC approximately $200.00 to purchase) or you can get a larger drivers side pin from Haibeck for $50.00 here -

The oversize pin is the easier way to go if that is the problem.
Good luck.

thanks for the help. but it turns out I never got close to the four bolts the first time. I took it to my relative who worked on a bunch of GM tilt columns before. so we took apart got the pins out which were snug and tight. then we got to the bolts. they were loose. so backed them out and put some red lock tight on the bolts and snugged them down. put the column back together and now its all tight

Those bolts won't be backing out anytime soon.

I hope not. That is not a real fun of a job. Gm should have there heads looked at for designing something like that. What a nightmare

Consider yourself lucky. Usually the tilt base to tilt pin fit is hogged out.
