I was thinking that if the C5 wasn't ready they would have put the LS1 in a 97 C4 body. Now would the performance numbers be better in a C4? I think I read somewhere that the 96 Lt4 put down a quicker 1/4 mile than the 97 C5 LS1 powered vette. But that could have been just hardcore C4 owners trying to justify still owning a 96.

What are the performance numbers of a C4 with an LS engine in it? Anybody have one willing to share?

Where did you read about the LT4 vs LS1?

I've got an LT4 and my buddy has had 3 C5's. Power wise, his ZO6 was the only one I couldn't hang right with. The C5's will out stop mine and maybe out handle mine, but the early C5's weren't that much stronger. A ready made C4 engine bay for an LS motor would have been nice, but I don't think GM would have gone to that much trouble for a one year run. The LT4 was basically just a hotrodded LT1, it already fit the car and all the harnesses.
As much as I love the C4, the C5's and up are improvements all the way around!

Not a chance.

The whole package was developed to be released at the same time.
If something would have came up to delay the introduction of the C5, the C4 would have continued as is.

Same thing that is going on with the C7 now.
They would not have released the "New" LT1 in the C6 platform.

Yeah, the last time GM did that with a Corvette was carrying the CeaseFire over from 82 into the 84 Vette. Grand idea.

The 97 C4 would have been the same other than minor updates every year gets. Engineering the LS1 into the C4 with One year only wire harness, cooling system, mounts, ETC would have throwing money away. Only real thing I could see them doing to make a second last hurrah would be making the LT4 standard.
