Default coolant in resovoiur

I had an upper hose replaced today (96) that had been leaking after the radiator was replaced. the mechanics should have changed it when new radiator was installed but never the less, I went down to check on the car 4 hours after I brought it home and noticed that the coolant was still above the hot mark on in the over fill container. What is my potential problem here??

Too high?
Last thing I'd worry about

Just a little to much coolant put in, no big deal.

If it bothers you, siphon some out to the cold mark in the morning.

Don't worry about it. It it is too high, it'll take care of itself.

The cap is vented so think about it.

There is an air leak in the 'closed' system negating the siphon of coolant from the overflow bottle back to the surge tank during cool-down.

If the overflow bottle is full, the surge tank should be at a low level.

You need to check all hose ends for splits, hose clamps for tightness,
surge tank cap gasket for any deformity, anything that would allow air to enter the coolant system.

Make sure the connection from the surge tank tube to the overflow bottle is secure.

You are looking for an air leak....... pressurizing a full coolant system should aid in finding the leak.

A blown head gasket allowing exhaust gases to enter the cooling system would cause similar symptoms, but you would see immediate overheating.

Find the air leak.................

Seabright is right. Lots of bad advice on this question. You probably have a vacuum leak that prevents the fluid from being pulled back into the surge tank and radiator, exactly as your original question stated. Is the radiator 100% full after the engine has cooled off? If not, that confirms the vacuum leak. Check your pressure cap. The three rubber gaskets in the cap must be free of any cracks to seal properly. This is commonly missed in this type of problem.
If the surge tank and radiator are 100% full, I owe an apology to several people! Please let us know what you find.

It appears that that there was just to much coolant put in after new hose was put on. I removed radiator cap and checked that the level was full after it had cooled. I have driven it for a few days with no leaks and have noted that the recovery tank is at the half way mark after engine has cooled. if there was air in the system it may be working itself out.
