Dumb question for the day
I recently bought a very nice 1988 Corvette. The dash board is a virtual juke box - but top speed EIGHTY FIVE mph??? I'm just curious, since I haven't had the chance to find out first hand (yet), what happens to the bar chart and numerical read out numbers on the speedometer when you....er.....exceed 85?

For a while in the mid to late 80's, all US cars had 85 mph speedometers.
Thank the .gov for that.
Not sure if the digital would keep going up or not though.

It'll read up to 999 mph. Or at least the digital display is capable of that anyway.
The funny thing is Camaros and Firebirds had 150mph speedo options... and yet the vettes bargraph doesn't go up that high. Stay classy Gm
I can confirm the speedo works well into triple digit speeds. *on a closed course. I do not endorse going triple digit speeds on public roads*

My 79 had an 85 mph speedo. They changed it midyear. I was so pissed when I took delivery and saw that. Was 160 when I ordered it

GM kept with the 85 mph on a lot of cars until mid to late 80's.
I had an '86 Buick Regal T-Type with digital speedometer that would go up to 85 then the 85 would start blinking on and off.

Over 85 the Earth's polarity reverses, gravity goes wild and the car will shoot into space at escape velocity, while causing the planet to collapse into a black hole.
You'll also run out of gas before you pass the moon, so you won't be able to slow down before leaving the solar system.
Think of the rest of us and DON'T DO IT!

Thanks for all of your input. The next nice day we have I'll try it out a little. "Officer, I wasn't really speeding........I was doing some research!"
