My fronts had the same carpet over then as the rears. My fronts have suffered no abuse with the new cloth. It's been over 2 years now.

Well got the fronts done this afternoon and they came out great! They were covered with the same carpet as the back speakers! What were the engineers thinking!

Thanks, they sound great and look even better!
The fronts were easier to cover than the rear! I did have to use alcohol to clean the glue off the front where the carpet was glued.
I didn't have to use any glue on the front, just double sided carpet tape on the back all the way around the edge and streched it to fit!
Looks like a professional did it if I do say so myself!

I had these same locations in my 89 with 91 dash. It works well and sound is good but the OEM speaker cover do take away for the sound a bit.
Here is a pic right after I test fitted the door sill cover. Prior to cleaning

Hi There AF1, is that a factory speaker cover for the front? The one we took off my dads 90 looks dfferent?

Jeff,
Are your front speakers stock? Question about front speakers in general. My dads don't seem to be working at all? The rears are super loud and sound good but when you fade to the front you can't tell they are one. Not sure if we sould send the front assemblies out to have the amps fixed or just replace the front speakes altogether with an aftermarket?

Sounds like a potential amp failure
I have nothing stock in my system:
Fronts:
Door: CDT 6.5
Frame rail (OE lication) CDT 1" tweeter and CDT 4"
Rears:
Elemental Designs EU700 one on each side
Amps:
Arc Audio KS300.4 (one amp for fronts, one for rears)
Headunit:
Pioneer App Radio 2

Yeah my dad says the same, he wants them exposed to get the sound. If we send his back to fix the amps not sure how we will make that happen unless we re-cover the speaker cover with a thinner speaker material. If we go after market I was thinking of using the factory box and re-usung the carpet but using the speaker covers as well.

Paper Speaker Cone Mod
I can't believe I never thought to do this when I had my '90 ZR-1, what a great idea!
Another mod you can do to the stock speakers (I'm one that thinks the stock Bose system sounds great when working properly) to make them sound better that I did (there was an old how-to on this somewhere on this forum, but I can't remember where) is make a 1:1 mixture of Elmer's wood glue and warm water and paint several layers of this mixture onto the rear speakers and the larger front speaker (the how-to said not to do this to the small front tweeters) and letting each coat dry before applying the next.
I think I did around 3-4 coats on mine and it really does improve the sound quality. Makes the stock paper speakers sound a lot crisper like the more modern poly ones.
So combine the wood glue mod with the speaker carpet replacement mod and the stock Bose system will really sound good! If all the amps are working correctly, that is. Of course it won't ever sound quite as good as the modern systems, but these two mods will improve the sound a lot.
