When I bought mine new in 89 it was my daily driver. Then it became my second car, now it's my toy that gets a weekend run. Any time it's always fun. Still debating if I want to sell it. After all these years and it still runs so well, that's one of the things I wasn't expecting from a performance car.
Their build quality really was a cut above the GM standard in 89. I recall when the Escort Series showed off how well the Z51 with adjustable suspension and a 6 speed performed against the competition of the day. The Vettes finished 1st & 2nd and trounced the Porsche 911's so badly that they refused to race the next year. Made me smile.
As for the prices, when they get this old it's a combination of condition, options, rarity and mileage. The numbers I see are all over the place, but if you look closely at the cars, you usually get what you pay for.
